I've read many articles on the benefits of feeding pre-killed mice versus live. I just purchased my first corn snake last Friday afternoon. Her caretaker told me she had recently moved up to live fuzzies, was a good eater, and had last eaten the previous day (Thursday). I would like to get her switched to pre-killed food before she's big enough for more dangerous adult mice.

So I was looking around and the frozen feeder suppliers all seemed fairly pricey when shipping costs were added. I considered killing local bought feeder mice myself and wondered what the most humane option would be. I came across a home euthanasia tutorial at this website.

I'm considering having my dad help me build the more fancy gas chamber near the bottom of that page but wanted to ask experienced snake owners what they thought first. I can tell you that I'm quite fond of mice as well as snakes so I don't think I'd be able to beat one against a wall or carefully break one's neck. They're just too adorable.

It sounds as if you have done a lot of research. I think the gas chamber would be the best method for you to euthanize the mice.

A couple of other suggestions would be to check some local pet stores. Many carry frozen mice. For only one snake it may not too expensive to purchase from one of them.

Another is to see if there are any local snake expos near you. Many dealers will have bulk frozen mice for sale. This would be very economical.

I called all the local pet stores in my area and finally found one that sells frozen feeder mice. They have no minimum purchasing requirements and a wide selection of ages.

I'm glad I no longer need to create a mouse version of Auschwitz.

I sent you a PM, but I'm not sure you got it. I live in Boise too. If you get frozen fuzzies from Petco or Petsmart its going to cost you quite a bit. I breed my own rats. Rat pinks are the same size as mouse fuzzies. I'd be glad to offer you a litter of rat pinks for a lot less than the same amount of mouse fuzzies. Heck, one litter would last you a few months for sure. My last litter had 19 pinks!!! Let me know if you're interested, and welcome to the Source.
