What do snakes do?

jazzgeek

The Rule Of Thirds.
Eat and shed.

But usually not at the same time - and practically never from tail to head, in either eating or shedding.

Which why I had to grab the camera when feeding Snake Mary, my '05 Charcoal het Diffused (poss amel, anery) girl I got from Creatures of the Night. I thought she was looking a little dull when I put her in the feeding tub, but thought nothing of it. She got her three fuzzies, and I covered the tub with a towel (she prefers to dine in the dark).

This is what I saw when I lifted the towel - one rodent remaining and skin bunched along her midsection......as she shed from tail to head. Figuring that the meal initiated the whole process, I put a hide in the tub for her to rub her snout on, and left her be. She's settling into her new skin, and polished off her third fuzzy.

You don't get much more "freshly shed" than this. :) Thanks for looking!

regards,
jazz

LOL! Now that has GOT to be a first! I didn't even think it'd be possible for them to shed backwards... silly snake.

She is STUNNING by the way

I wonder how long it took her to realize she had too crawl backward to get out of her skin.....Must have been a weird feeling for her too; shedding against the direction the scales are pointing in... Lovely corn btw!

Great photos, Dale. What a beautiful charcoal. I've never seen anything like that shedding business. I think I would have freaked out seeing one of mine shed backwards. Good thing you took pictures. Who would've believed it?

Even the unshed, dull parts show a very handsome girl. I do love charcoals. :santa:

But how bizarre to see it done tail to tip instead of the "proper" way.

that is a very interesting picture........and a nicely colored snake. thanks for posting.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! Yep, I'm really pleased with this young lady - I think she'll be great for producing the deep, dark pewters that I prefer. Of the three I got from Michelle at once (my pewter male and normal het pewter female are the other two), this one is the champion eater and the most mellow in handling.

But given what happened, I now fear that the eggs will be coming out of her mouth. :grin01:

I missed this thread originally, but I knew when I saw Galen's avatar a thread digger had been at work!

You know, you've probably never seen her shed before. She may do it backwards all the time!

Well, I'm the responsible party - I linked this thread this morning in a post responding to someone seeing their snake shed.

Every shed she's had since this one has been the normal, start-at-the-chin, inside-out variety.

I am quite positive this is not new to anyone but were you aware that the cornsnake was due to shed?
Perhaps I missed you mentioning the answer to that but as far as I am aware eating while in shedding cycle is an open invitation for shedding issues as it may tear and not come off smoothly.

I imagine you simply weren't aware she was due to shed.

Gorgeous snake!!! and awesome picture

Nice pics! I got to witness one of my snakes shed the other day. It was awesome! I noticed one weird thing though..
I saw a clean tail going through the shed head piece. The most sense I can make from the pictures I took is that Sassy went back through her own shed. Very odd!
