I was at school to day and I have just come back home and my Mum told me that there was a fire in the snakes Viv she said she found constantly moving his head so she put him in to a plastic ontainer and put him in the tortoise tank she has moved him into a new bigger tank and he seems a bit shaken but happy non the less the heat lamp had fell through the hold cut in the mesh and burnt the wood chipping the tank was apparently filled with smoke will their be any side affects on his health or will he be OK?!!

Hmm... I would think as long as you see nothing "weird" in the next couple days, he should be okay. Reptiles are less dependent on oxygen, so he's less likely to have problems from oxygen deprivation.

I would recommend a UTH and thermostat.

I would monitor him for a few days and see how he is. However i would book in an appointment to see the vet as snakes really dont cope well with smoke.

Sorry to hear the bad news. :(

I read the instruction manual for my uth yesterday and it already has a built in thermostat (silly me) because he has movved into a bigger tank I would think the temp will be ok thanks

If you have access to a herp vet, your best bet is to consult with them. Snakes survive forest fires where they are deprived of oxygen, but I don't know by what mechanism. Obviously, if yours is breathing normally and doesn't have mucus coming out of it's nose or mouth, that's a good sign. I'd keep a close watch to make sure this event doesn't spark a resperatory infection.

Heat lamps, from what I understand, do pose a greater fire hazzard than a UTH, so your experience is probably a vote for them.

Again, consult a vet if you have access... and keep a close watch for mucus or strained breathing.

Your UTH has a thermostat built in? What type is that? How do you set the temperature?

A lot of UTHs say that they're regulated. In my personal opinion, you still need a thermostat or rheostat.

Glad he's apparently ok. This is why I would never use a heat lamp on an animal that didn't require the actual light.

Personally, I would give him more time before you try to feed him. At least a few days. If you try to feed him too soon and he refuses you won't really know if he refused because something serious is wrong or because he's just still stressed from what happened. If someone set my house on fire with me in it, I'd probably be shaken up for a while. :eek1:

Agree with Zach!
Lets see...
His house caught on fire.
Your mom snatched him out of that and put him in a plastic container (hey, gotta do what you gotta do!).
Then he, while still in the plastic container was put into something with walking rocks (Ah! What's that??).
Now, he's in a new, bigger house, with different sort of heat than he's used to.

I'd say that he's probably more than a little stressed out by all that. Even though tomorrow is his normal feeding day, you're probably better off giving him an extra day or two. Keep a close eye on him, though, for any sign of a negative response to the fire/smoke.

Good luck!
