Herp Logging Website

Morph Collector

Extremely Obsessed
Hiyas folks. I am NOT! trying to advertise for another website. However, this website I found is interesting, and amazing. It does all your tracking for you, on the internet, and its completely free.

Check out the description on youtube (where I found out about the site, and have since created a username for iherp).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPakrFzQppU

And once you are done, check out iherp.com

This won't be for everyone I am sure - people with 30k snakes might not want to update all the time and that respectable. This would probably be for someone with around <100 snakes, it does EVERYTHING! It tracks breeding, feeding, weights, you can upload pics and do a progression (though, I still want to see them HERE as well).

Ps. I wasn't sure this post is out of line, but I hope it can be used as a resource for those who want to, and if nothin else check it out see if you like it or not. I also wasn't sure where to put this thread, so if its in the wrong spot (and it isn't deleted) please move it to the correct spot. Thanks guys, as I said before I only put this here to help, not to draw attn away from this site (they don't have forums on that one I am pretty sure - so GET ALL YOUR INFO HERE!)

It's interesting.

I however wouldn't rely on another persons hosting company to keep my records safe. I do use my hosting company to back up my data (I use Microsoft Excel), but I don't keep it in ONE place in case something crashes.

If you carefully read their Terms & Conditions, this also stands out to me:

IHerp, LLC., does not claim ownership of any information or material you transmit, distribute, post, communicate or store on, to or through the Site or Service; however, by submitting or posting information on, to, or through the Site, you agree that IHerp, LLC. shall be free in perpetuity to copy, disclose, distribute, incorporate, and otherwise use such information and all data, images, sounds, text and other materials embodied therein for any and all commercial or non-commercial purposes. No compensation will be paid with respect to the present or future use of this information, unless expressly agreed otherwise.

Basically it says if you put information/pictures on their web site, they have the right to use it however they like without asking permission and without crediting you.

I agree with all the above. It does look like a cool idea, but I prefer to maintain control over my own personal records and data. Signing away all rights to everything you upload sounds to me like they just wanted a very clever way to get access to stuff they could possibly sell off or pics to fill their stock photo site. But maybe I'm just overly paranoid, lol.

Anyway, if you want tracking software for free, there's a link in my sig for an ok tracking program ;)

yours is more than just OK

Hi Gang, this is Aaron from iHerp.

The legal stuff needs a bit of ... uh... revision. I just copied the TOU from a friend of mines site who gave me permission to do so. Unfortunately, terms of use are important for a site, because it seems that people are sue-happy these days over everything. Such as the MySpace couple that met online then sued MySpace because that's where they met. The whole legal thing sucks, but in this day and age (*sigh*).. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I'm not a lawyer. I'm a herper.

At any rate, I will update the TOU to be a little more applicable to my application shortly. For the record:

1.) I'm not interested in trying to make money by selling peoples photos .. the point of the site is to give people a place to share and manage their collection online. It supports breeding loans and shortly a pretty sick lineage database. So it's a true-multi user system to help you out with management of your collection, networking with your friends, and just all around fun social stuff.

2.) The site database has a job that backs up every hour. Then at the end of the day I run another job that zips everything up and puts it onto offline storage. This is beyond best practices, and backed up a lot more frequently than I back anything up on my hard drive. :)

3.) It's not "they," it's "me". I've been professionally developing database driven applications since 1996. I was one of the primary programmers for a presidential campaign site (one of the two big parties), the NAACP National Voter Fund, NRA, and literally hundreds of other database driven apps, stores, etc. So I'm not a hack at this by any means, internet programming has been my livelihood for over 10 years. I love what I do.

It just so happens that I've been a lifelong herp-guy too. I've been interested in reptiles since I was .. uh... 10. With my first garter snake that I caught, who was gravid.. I was hooked. 20-some years later, I thought that making a piece of internet-based software to help people manage their collections, everyone could use, and integrate, would be really cool.

Thank you guys for bringing this to my attention, I'm not a big corporation, and your input, both good and bad, is EXTREMELY valuable to me. I want this product to be something that is built for everyone to use, so if you're interested in helping to develop this product, and put in some feedback of what rocks, what doesn't, and anything to make it better, please feel free to. With everyones' help, this thing can only get better and better.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me at [email protected], I'm a pretty approachable guy after the morning caffeine kicks in.

Thanks again,

Aaron

The whole thing would be better off being offline, without the need to upload anything to your server. You can talk all you want about backups, but the first time something goes wrong, your butt will be on the line (and I'm certainly not going to trust your word in regards to my data being safe on your server).

Those of us on Mac need a herp tracking software that actually works with our OS, we've got nothin'. :(

Sorry for the brief offtopic post, but my app should work on a MAC. I don't have access to one to verify or say exactly how to set it up, but it's written in 100% Java, so will run on any OS that has a current Java runtime engine (JRE). You download the jre from java.com. If you find a MAC person who knows how to run java apps, that should get you up and running. Feel free to email or pm me if you want more info/help, as I don't want to steal this thread anymore. Not trying to be pushy, just helpful :)

You can also just look at your logs using the program then print the screen to help backup your files. everyone here is way to paranoid! give it a chance and continue logging your old way too!!! I am sure you will all find this much handier!!!!

Also there is a handy print worksheet function to help you keep track of feeding a larger collection!!!!

This promoting of "iHerp" is getting on my nerves. Is this guy paying people or something to advertise it everywhere?
It's nothing special and I wouldn't trust a website, ever. It's not safe at all and I just don't buy it.

Even if one printed out each and every time (talk about waisting paper - and that's NOT backing up)...But you'd have to reenter the data if it did crash.

Why would I want to use both? So others can access my personal collection information and use as they feel the need to?

I also don't see how logging into a web site to update my records is handier compared to opening a file...

Wow. LOL! I set this post as hopefully a helpful resource. As I said it was no promotion (no more than the gene wizard is for data). I am going to use iHerp because of the printing, and the community. Its like this website, or a few others I am on just a network. Sorry for "getting on your nerves" by trying to help. I just meant for you to "check it out see if you like it or not." No offense fellas. Take it or leave it its only a resource.

MegF posted a link about this site a couple days ago. :shrugs:

I use Duff's ScerpDB, have NO complaints (and more than a few praises), and have no reason to change.

Technically, until the TOS is actually updated, my pictures and records are still open for use. I agree with the others who've said it: It's not a comfortable thought.

I tend to agree..... It just is not appropriate for advertisements to be posted on the general discussion forums. I do offer the capability for anyone to run advertisements on this site and my others, if they are interested.

Otherwise, I would prefer to NOT have this site, nor any others I run, to be overrun with "infomercials" of any type.

Ha, I have a graph paper note book that I have all my snakes listed in. i have the split up into species. This makes it easier for me to look at who has been fed or not. i know its not high tech but I do not need to launch my computer or key in something when I can do a check mark in my note pad.
Some times low tech works for the best
