RI treatment....

snakewispera snr

The Devils Advocate
Recently we picked up a trio of Carpets..... All were fine but we thought we noticed a click in the Jungle sib female... Sure enough a week or so went by and we noticed this click again, so we packed all three up and went to our vet..... They were all endoscoped and the Jungle sib has a slight upper respiratory infection. The other two are clear at the moment.....
As we've banged on about F10 and nebulisers so much I thought I'd put up a thread.......
Our vet has supplied us with 0.4% F10 5% baytril mixture.... We put 5ml mix in the nebuliser put the snake in a large sealed RUB and plug the hose into the RUB.... We nebulise for 20 mins then leave the snake in the RUB for a further 30 mins.... (snakes can hold their breath for a long time) we do this twice a day.
We are treating all the snakes (as it makes sense to make sure they are all clear) but they only get one treatment daily...
This is a seven day treatment...
The jungle is looking better and breathing easier, so I hope this is going to work....
We were warned that there is a resistant RI about at the moment, in which case the F10 will work but the Baytril won't...... So we got him to order in a stronger anti-biotic, just in case..... We'll keep you posted on our progress.....

Glad you caught it and are getting it under control, Mike. Sending "get well soon" wishes to your little girl.

Cheers..... It's in the very early stages..... No bubbles and only a slight mucus in the mouth (you have to look hard to see it).
The vet is confident, so we are taking our lead from him.....

Here you go Nanci...This is how it looks.....
.
This is the nebuliser... It nebulises ???? (Steam comes out sort of ???)

That was a good catch on the RI symptoms, you must be some kind of snake wisperer or something.
Just wanted to chime in on the nebulizer if anyone is wondering.
You can look for them in medical supply stores. My Sweetie sometimes uses one for her asthma medicine.
The one we have has a small compressor that forces liquid through an orifice, I guess it is more correctly called an atomizer but the mist is very, very fine. I can see how it could work quite well for introducing antibiotics into the respiratory system.

Cheers all....
LOL Alan, Snakelistena more like...
And Elle is right.... F10 does seem to be the herpers answer to everything...LOL

A quick update on our treatment........
Sorry I'm a bit late but I've been away for a while.
We used the nebuliser for just over a week........ All the snakes are clear of the initial RI we spotted.... Touch wood everything seems to be ok, but we'll keep monitoring the situation as RI's have a tendency to re-occur....

Glad to hear they're all healthy, Mike! Sending good health vibes your way in hopes there are no relapses.

A week after starting the treatment, the female jungle started eating again......10 days after starting the treatment she was back to her normal 'grumpy' self, ready to bite anything that moves...... I've seen this method of treatment for RI's used a couple of times, but it's the first time I've ever used it..... The success rate is enough for me to recommend it as the best way forward...

Nanci,
Thanks for asking the snakewhisperer. I asked my vet today and she did not know what it was. She mixed the baytril with something else for my nebulizer.
Maizie had her first tx today in a plastic shoebox. She was not impressed with the setup. I suppose I should change my other post from "mouth problem" to RI.

F10 was made up first of all for birds..... It kills everything nasty, but is totally organic and safe to use on your pets..... Since snake people found out about it they have come up with a complete range for us to use .........

The only vet in my area stated that she has not heard of using any disinfectant in neubulizer form and has never heard of F10sc. So I am just doing the baytril in a nebulizer.
