@Sweetseraph: I think the daddy long legs is actually what we call a house spider. I think they are the ones spinning around madly when their web catches movement.

I found out that the vibrating spider actually is a member of the daddy long legs family of spiders... *Duh* didn't know there were more types of daddy long legs around.

Daddy Longlegs are not spiders, they're Harvestman. The difference is that spiders have two body parts (cephalothorax and abdomen) while Daddy Longlegs only have one body part. The "vibrating spider" is also know as the European cellar spider.

The wings of the cicada eventually change color once their wings harden, so they only look like that for an hour or so.

How about some more bug pics?

Actuyally, the name daddy long legs is used for spiders AND harvestmen and another type of bug I forgot. It is confusing, but it's what's going on :)

You are correct. I was wrong about that. I found an odd spider in my house yesterday and looked it up in my "In Ohio's Backyards: Spiders" book and it had Cellar Spiders listed as Daddy Longlegs - so I stand corrected.

What the heck is that ant thing with the giant butt?? Wow, seriously great photos, tspuckler!

I have no idea what the heck that is. I'm guessing that it's some sort of Blister Beetle. It's behavior was peculiar too - it would frantically run up to a plant, "taste test" it, and then run over to another plant and do the same thing. It didn't seem to care that I was "in its face" trying to get a photo.

I'm hoping to get a better camera for next year's trips/photography.

And while we're talking about Daddy Longlegs/Harvestmen, here's the weirdest one I've ever seen - found in Carter Caves, Kentucky in May:

WOW! You guys have inspired me to start carrying my macro lens around with me 24/7!

I'm glad that "all bugs" not just weird bugs can be included, because I unfortunately don't have pictures of anything truly fascinating.

A teeny tiny spider that was too small even for my macro lens.

A sweet moth. Unfortunately when I tried to pick it up all I got was a beautiful flash of what I could have taken a picture of (reddish orange colors underneath those wings), right before it flew off. Ahh well, next time!

And, it's funny... it seems as though bugs are more attracted to me when I have my snakes out for photo shoots..

That's all I have for now, but I'm sure my back yard is a treasure trove of all kinds of neat things to take pictures of. Now that I consider them "prime subject matter" maybe I'll see more things that would take interesting pictures!

What great pics, everyone. I LOVE Cicadas!!! They're my favorite bug of all time. Used to catch them and put them on potted plants INSIDE the house. BUT, the cooler air inside would often "shut them up" and they wouldn't make that lovely noise that they usually do. LOL.

There are so many photos I want to comment on!!!
Ohhh! The Jerusalem Cricket!!!! Those guys are just awesome. Kinda scarey, but awesome nonetheless. :)

I AGREE!!
Theere are so many photos here that are awesome!! and I'd love to comment on all of them!!

Thanks for posting guys!!.....Keeep them comming!!...I'll post more later tonight!!
:crazy02:

Thanks again!!

AHHHHHHHH!!! My absolute FAVE of the "Weirdo-Bugs"!!! Love them all, but the Chaco looks awesome!!! Congrats on having a very KEWL collection! :)

EWWWWW I don't do bugs. Why in the heck did I look at every page in this thread?! That cave cricket thing, OMG, when we first bought our house the garage was full of them (or some of their kin) and they chase you!! Seriously! I'm not over reacting, they really do chase you!

And Spiders...... I feel about spiders the way my coworkers feel about me having snakes! haha I work as a nurse in a nursing home and a huge black fuzzy spider was in a residents room. Well I started screaming and my lil resident seen the spider and she said, "aren't you going to kill it?!" I said, "No, but I can throw something at it!" Then my CNA came and saved the day!! I can't help it. I flip out.

The cicada is very pretty, and the butterflies are gorgeous. The rest... oh me oh my, I just don't know.

Kudos on all the photography though!

Maybe I'll go exploring tomorrow if I get enough guts and post some pics of my own.
