"Burst eggs"?

Hi guys.. Hoping some-one can tell me what on earth happened here... got home from work this morning to find that 4 eggs in a clutch of 8 were open & quite sunken. It didn't look like the regular slits - one was so open it had a flap on the side that I could see through. I could see something in it, but not moving.. when I checked again tonight, no noses poking out yet, no movement. I contacted a friend of mine who breeds regularly & he suggested I open the eggs. I did, & found 2 perfectly formed snakes, but still inside the membrane in the egg. Can anyone please explain to me why / how the eggs were opened? The one with a flap has a snake head right there at the hole, but still in the membrane & no movement at all.. The remaining eggs that were closed are still closed, no slits yet. The eggs have been in an incubator (lucky reptile) from the day they were laid & temps maintained. They split on day 55 & were randomly mixed with the "good" eggs..
Here's the last egg.. I made the hole bigger to see what was happening, but the original "slit" was about 2cm on the side, not on the top, & the egg was very sunken. The other 2 that I messed with - the babies were dead unfortunately - although I'm not sure if they alive before I started messing with them. They were perfectly formed, although small. I've left this one alone, don't want to fiddle anymore than I already have.. I can't tell if the hatchling is still alive, but it's definitely still in the membrane.. Which leaves me really puzzled as to how the eggs slit themselves open... The egg with the flap with a head right there had a very small hatchling in it - seems deformed, as if it stopped growing at some stage.
If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think they slit open by themselves. I would look for someone with a grudge or a curious child. Just my opinion.

Hi there.. I live alone, so no-one was in my flat while I was at work.. So far, no-one on the SA forums can come up with a solution..

Bizarre. I wonder if another animal could have done it. Cat perhaps? Except in the pic it really looks like scissor marks. They are at right angles and the slit goes past the corner of the cut as might happen with scissors.

Hey there.. Those are from me when I opened it to see what was going on - the original slit was on the side of the egg, about 2cm long.. I found it odd that it was on the side - I know I put the eggs in the container without changing their position, but I waited a day to see if a nose would stick out.. Nothing.. Then a friend advised that I open it more to try to see what's happening as he had no explanation either.. & the other eggs are now on day 60 & no pipping yet, but at least no funny splits!

In that case it is possible they started to pip and then something happened. While not common I have heard of clutches where eggs pip and nothing ever comes out, the hatchlings D.I.E. Whole clutches even.

I would take them out before they start to rot. Plus if there is any contamination it might reduce the spread (if it isn't already too late). But someone with more experience should be able to give better advice.

I know you did some of the cuts, but I wish you had taken a photo before you did anything to them. I don't see how a hatchling could have made the slits by your description of them and what you found. Very strange.
