Hey I'm new to snakes, and need a name! :P

Hey guys! I'm looking for a little help here. I just turned 17 and my parents bought me the best present ever, a corn snake. I absolutely love it, I'm not sure if its male or female so I'm just going to say male until I can figure it out.

But I am looking for some name ideas for it and need some help
Name ideas I've gotten so far, Clyde, Ivan, Jake, Casper, Ziggy, Smokie, and Boris. Any other names would be awesome. I also am not sure what exact type of snake it is so I'm going to post a few pictures here of it and see if you guys can help me.

I also have a few questions about heating with it too, i am currently using a 20 gallon tall tank with a under tank heating mat and a 50 watt heating lamp (depending on how cool it is in my room i have a second one i can turn on as well) it hovers around 80 in there on the warm side, im not using a probe thermometer yet im getting one next week when i get paid. Do you think that is enough heat?

Oh! and also what are the rules for holding him? I just got him on last tuesday the 5th should i leave him alone for a week or so or should i be holding to get him used to hands and stuff?

As far as holding him, I would wait a few at least before holding him, but you can also tell by the personality (I think) if they will enjoy being hold for hours on end or for just a small amount of time before getting antsy to go back to its home. All corn snakes are different in how they act so you'll have to watch and see.

I'm no corn expert, I only have one Classic corn that was a rescue, so I can't help identify the morph you have there, but hopefully someone more experienced can help you with that.

And finally for names, I actually second the name Clyde for your little guy there, the name just fits the picture in my opinion!

As far as the heat thing goes...you might have overdone it a touch. He only needs a under tank heater...no heat light required.

I was told that at the pet store too, but even with the lamp and the UTH its 80 degress F, and from what i've been told it should be 75-85 degrees F at the warm side.

As for as a name, I would go with whatever your parents been calling you.

I also agree with Tara, the UTH is really all you need. Are you regulating it with a rheostat or thermostat? If not, I can pretty much guarantee that it is too hot for your corn. If you put your hand on it (on top of the glass) and it feels warm to the touch, then it is way too hot for your snake. UTHs can reach temps of well over 100 degrees. Once you get your probe thermometer, you'll be in better shape and can see what I mean. You don't want the ambient temperature to be 75-85, you want the warmest spot the snake can get to (in this case, directly on the glass over the UTH) to be around 80. The ambient temperature of your house will be fine for the rest of the tank, as long as it isn't too terribly cold.

Well thanks for that information, I will have to go out and get the probe thermometer ASAP and take a look into that.

And as for my quest to find a name for him, I am sort of hovering around Diego or Clyde, I was trying to look for a name that astucally has some meaning behind it that would either pertain to his coloring or have some sort of tie to a different language meaning soemthing to do with the word "snake"

You have an Amelanistic. It isn't Motley or Banded. It looks kinda Sunglow or Candycane because it is a baby. It will change in appearance A LOT in the first year or two.

An unregulated UTH can cause severe burns on a corn snake. 85 degrees is the MAX temp. My ZooMed UTH's get around 110. 90 degrees is enough to kill a young snake. Until you get a thermometer, I would turn off the heat. Or put a ceramic tile between the UTH and the tank.

No heat lamp required. All UTH's will get to at least what a corn needs.
