I figured my first post should be here. I'm really excited that I stumbled upon this forum (I did some Google searches on questions I had).
We bought our first snake last Saturday (17th) from Petco. I like the spontaneity of how it happened, but I'll summarize by saying we went there clueless about most reptiles, and walked out with a corn snake after talking with a very knowledgeable reptile-lover employee. I picked out the albino (can I say that or do you guys prefer the technical amelanistic (hey you should add that word to your spell checker) term?) because I thought it was very pretty.
We now have it set up in a 10 gal vivarium. I just bought an UTH for a gradient and non-summer months (the cage runs 80F during the day and 75F at night). It's 13" long right now. I read that we should leave it alone for a week (AFTER handling it for a while on Saturday - but we were still rearranging its home, adding things and getting it "just right," so it may have been unavoidable). We are letting it rest now, without disturbing it.
I DID check on it today, finding it under a rock, because I hadn't seen it in two days and just wanted to make sure it hadn't escaped somehow. I thought I would be in trouble if it had, but not from my family... all my Facebook friends know we have it, and if it wasn't in the cage, I don't think any would come over again!
That reminds me of a chat I had.
Her: "Ewww, yuck! Why did you get a snake?!" (obviously squeamish)
Me: "To take care of our rat problem. So, when are you guys coming over again?"
My family consists of my wife, two daughters (3 yrs and a 6 mo old), three cats, and now a corn snake! I'm a mostly stay-at-home dad with the girls. I thought it would be nice to show my 3-year-old some more variety of life. We have plenty of spiders and bugs outside, but not much for reptiles.
So, time for some questions, if ya don't mind. I searched the forums but didn't find the answers. Actually, I have these questions -because- of reading through the forums.
Ya know, I should move the questions to the Husbandry (what, no Wifery?). I'll link it here.
