Did Our Gaia Lay an Egg?

Kate

I Love Herps!
Gaia is a Central Albino, about 3 yrs old, and about 5 ft long. My boyfriend got to his house and called me freaking out because she had this 'thing' in her new terrarium with her. She has never had a hide or a heat source before (not our doing) and we rectified that situation yesterday with a great terrarium, under tank heat source, hide, a climber, a new substrate (was on dirt, now aspen shavings). So, he gets home and she is under her hide, curled protectively around the pictured object. I called her previous owner, and she's never laid eggs before. She just ate yesterday, but it was a little black mouse. Please be kind, we are new snake owners...

Oh, added note: she's very protective of this thing, even when returned to her cage, she immediately went and circled around her hide.
Also, it is hard to the touch, not pliable.

Thanks! She's never laid one before, what brought it on?
Should we try to breed her?
We thought they only ovulated when around males, when will she stop acting so protective of it, and will she lay more?

In order of questions:
1) It could be a variety of things. Sometimes, virgin females will lay one, or even an entire clutch of slugs. It's that whole biological clock thing and all that jazz.
2) That depends on whether or not you believe you're ready to take on the responsibility of an entire clutch of baby snakelets.
3) Nope, maybe, and who knows!

Ooh! How exciting!!!
Thank you so much, and as a thanks, I shall ask you more questions!
How would we locate someone with a male if she wanted to breed?
Do you put the babies in a separate terrarium from the mother?
I've been browsing through past posts etc, I'm so excited to have a forum like this!!

You can buy a male from some one on here.
Yes, the babies would go in separate cages.. each one needs it's own individual cage because they can and will eat each other. It's also very stressful if they have to live with others.
Breeding should not be taken lightly, you should be prepared to keep each and every baby because the market is not that good right now. You also have to be prepared to force feed non feeders, or even euthanize babies that are deformed/won't eat. Also, you'd have to make sure that whatever you'd breed her to would have matching genetics, otherwise you'll get a clutch of normals that will be hard to sell.

Hey guys, I hope someone sees this!!
We just moved her to a new enclosure with the first tank heat source of her life, a new substrate, etc. She laid this slug, and at least one other thus far, and she has gone from the sweetest, most personable gal ever, to queen b1&@h with tail shaking, posturing, and all. It says on here that they don't guard their eggs, and we fed her on Tuesday, so she can't be hungry, she hasn't even passed that mouse yet!
So my questions are, is this mood change a temporary effect of her hormones with egg laying?
Could the change in home turf be freaking her out?
AND, should we expect a shed after she's done laying slugs, or do they only have the after-laying shed when the eggs are actually fertile??
Thank you! Y'all are really understanding!

Just an idea but what are the temps in the viv, if she is getting ready to shed she could be in a bad mood. How big is this snake and how big is the viv, how many hides, water dish big enough. Picture of viv may help.

Our temps never go over 90 F, at the UTH, but she's never had any form of heat before.
She just finished a shed last week, and is 3 yrs old and just shy of 5 ft long; she's never laid eggs before now.
Her viv is 36" x 18" x 18" here's the link: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4070851
She currently has 1 hide (working on that) on the hot side, and a stacked stick climbing feature thing from Petco in the middle that she could hide under. She's never had a hide before, either.
She loves to soak, so for now her waterbowl is a large dog bowl.

OK sorry you said her size earlier. How are you measuring heat, it is too much heat that might make her moody. I had snakes that loved water, but also were in water more when they were hot (as in summer heat). You want to make sure you are taking the temp directly over the UTH not on the side or on top of the aspen. Also it could just be the new viv and she will settle down, maybe give her more hides.

Thanks, I'm running and getting a better thermometer or two this weekend, I read on here Walmart sells good ones?
And I may give her a used tissue box as a hide on the cool side until I can get her more fun ones. She hasn't soaked yet in this new viv, she did a lot in her Rubbermaid, though, so we got her a large bowl because of that, and in case power goes out or her UTH glitches, she at least has that to soak in as a back-up. She's only ever had that one container before, so she may be sensitive to change. We thought she'd handle it well because she's handled several car trips and her big move from a Conroe apartment with a yappy dog to a Spring house, but I guess changing vivs made it personal. What department would the thermometer I need be in?
