Weighing snakes?

You should get a gram scale. I've heard of people using kitchen ones that are meant to weigh food. I've seen one for 30 dollars, not too expensive.

You can get the kitchen ones, or, the postal ones. Check ebay :) or do a search for digital postal scales.

We use a gram scale....put a tupperware with top on the scale before you turn it on......so with the tupperware it weighs in at 0....then put the corn in there close the top and weigh again. We have to weigh all the colubrids like this...the ball pythons just sit on the scale....lazy snakes.

Scales

Thanks guys, I'll see if my mom will let me have her old food scale. :)
Also, does anybody now how many grams are in a pound?

1 pound = 453.59237 grams....... :wavey: according to google....

Pounds and grams

Oh goodness. Thank you. How much do both the females and the males have to weigh to mate? Does it matter for the male?

Rule of thumb for females. Three years old. three feet long, and 300 grams.
Males??? that varys and not as much...two years :shrugs:

Yeah... the size of the male doesn't matter as much as the female's size does. The female will be the one gravid and laying eggs and such. All the male does is get her pregnant.

My digital scale showed grams and ounces. Most scientific weights, including snakes weights, are done in grams, not ounces or pounds anyway.

Male's size

I know, I miss wrote. I do that sometimes. Ouy to me. lol

What I meant was when does the male become sexually mature? Does he have to be a certain age, length, or weight? We hope to breed this fall but not if it will hurt Celeste or if Elliot is not mature enough yet. I think they are OK, though. Celeste is about 3' and Elliot is a tad smaller. If I get my mom's old food scale I'll post their weights and try to get their exact lengths while they are out and about.

Well, if Celeste is 300 grams (and more is better), then you can breed her. If Elliot is just a bit smaller, it should be okay. If I'm wrong, correct me.

Weights and Measurments

Ok, I got that scale from my mom. Celeste is 160g and at or about 3'. (Is she skinny? She's grown quite a lot since we got her.) Elliot is 100g and a little over 2.5'. I guess they got a while before they could mate. The shop owner who raises Corns too said 2' or 200g. So either way they're too small. :shrugs: Think they might be ready for the next breeding season?

Most people here actually suggest 3 ft. 300 grams. I certainly wouldn't breed at less than that. When I saw how much weight my female lost after laying her eggs, I wouldn't breed anything at less than 300+ grams. I would also suggest that you download Serpwidgets measuring program as people tend to overestimate the size of their animals. I'd have to pull the records to see what they weighed at 2.5-3 ft. They are all almost 4 ft. now at nearly 3 years. The smallest Okeetee is 47". Once they've had a chance to digest their meal from the other night, I'll be weighing them. I'm sure they are well over 300 grams as they were already at 300 before this.

Where can I find this? I tried searching for it to no avail.
Thank you.

I've downloaded it and it works perfectly. Really simple and easy to use, too. It's not like Photoshop or anything, where you have so many commands it's impossible to make head or tail of anything.

I get through Photoshop just fine, but maybe that's just me. :p
