Egg laying box question

LindsayMarie

Been here awhile
Where should the entry hole go and how big should it be?? I have the containers, vermiculite/sphagnum moss and all I need is a way for them to easily get in. What does everyone use to add the hole? Thanks, Lindsay

I have drill bits that make big circles. You have to be careful not to push too hard or you can crack the plastic.

I'm a bit less scientific - I just hack a snake-sized hole in either the side or the lid with a kitchen knife, then whittle away any sharp edges or melt them to make them smooth.

I've not noticed my lot preferring a side entrance to an overhead one. It just needs to be small enough to let them in and out without leaving them too exposed once inside.

And as an afterthought, make sure the hole can accommodate them when they've just eaten a mouse and are a bit fatter than usual!

Box cutter... I put min in the top of the lid towards one corner. I used fine grit sand paper to smooth out the cut edges.

The reason why I use the circle drill bits is because there are no sharp edges for the snakes to get caught on and it's super fast. The drill bits aren't that expensive...You can get a pack of 3-5 sizes for $10-15.

Thank you everybody :) I am going to use a circle drill bit I think and put the hole near one of the corners on the lid. Just hope they see/find it??? Or should I just put them in it at first?

I use a soldering iron to melt a hole in the lid about twice the diameter of the snake and this way I can melt off any sharper edges too.

If it's a first time mum then I put her in the box, when I first put the box in the viv.

Hope that helps, best wishes,

If you put the laying box in with them, they'll find it without help. Females wander the viv endlessly in the weeks leading up to laying, exploring every nook and cranny to find the perfect place to lay. Your laying box will be like the Presidential Suite!

I got a quick question-hope no one minds. What kind of containers do you guys use? I've heard that 1 gallon round ice cream buckets work great. :shrugs:

I actually just use the same little sterilites that hatchlings are housed in later... the showbox or 6 qt. This is why I cut the lid and not the tub, since I may use it later for them to live in :)
