Manny & Regina
so today was like any regular day. little man is taking his afternoon nap, momma is gettin ready for work, and i'm laying on the couch with a slipped disk in my back and playing my 360 when out of nowhere, i see the tails from my little cornsnakes whipping around in their coconut! i call regina out to come help me and as i get the cover off their cage and lift the coconut, low and behold, roxy, the more aggressive of the 2 female babies, has got toa, the way more tame and laid back one, wrapped up and trying to coil her up (the same way my balls look when they eat as compared to our corns because they DO NOT coil their food up at all, they just take them off the feeder tongs and eat) and roxy was biting toa right in the middle of her body!

now, i couldnt pull them appart, so i picked them up and dunked them in the water bowl. this got them appart, and when we got them separated, we couldnt see any visual problems with toa. she seemed ok after a few minutes. i picked her up and she seemed just as sweet as always, wrapping her tail around my pinky and just interlacing herself in my hands as always.

roxy on the other hand, has been striking at everything and will not let anyone touch her at all. they have been in the same cage for abour 3 months and there has never been a problem that we have seen like this. does this sound normal? how worried should we be? at this point, i'm ready to take her to petco and let them take her? any suggestions?

thanx a million.

You really should seperate them immediately.
Corns are solitary animals and should never be forced to share a cage. This is just one of many reasons why.
Do a search on "cohabbing".

Cannibalism in young corns may be uncommon, but I wouldn't say that it's abnormal. It certainly isn't the aggressor snake's fault that its instinct guided it to this outcome. These snakes are solitary animals and opportunistic feeders. In the wild, when they're young, other reptiles (including their own species at times) make up a large part of their diet. Permanently separate them, and you'll never have to worry about this again. It's not surprising that after you denied her her meal, and after you submerged her in water, Roxy is behaving defensively. I don't say this to be mean-- it doesn't sound like you knew that keeping them together was dangerous-- but the incident and her present aggression are your fault. Don't blame Roxy. If you can't house them separately for whatever reason, then by all means, get rid of one of them. I don't think Petco would take one anyway, but I wouldn't bother going that route. Petco sucks. Find a decent, privately owned pet store that takes proper care of their reptiles, or find someone to adopt one of them on your own.

I had a pair of Mexican Black Kings do that when they were supposed to be breeding. I got them apart but the female never recovered and eventually died. I think she had internal injuries.

roxy needs to be fe a little more for the time being and....must be tamed....it doesnt always work but i once cought a little garter in the back. that was a real ***** but very unique snake. so of course i had to have it. i tamed it by daily holding to show i was no threat.(i dont mean hold it all day every day) just like an hr or 2 sit on the couch watch tv with her in your hand.( WASH UP ALWAYS B4 HANDLING AND AFTER TO PREVENT DIESEAS TRANSFER TO EATHER PARTY) ... and yes just like the garter shes gonna bit you and love it at first... all you can do is just suck it up and ifshe wraps also just gently unwrap her.... a bonus to this is eventualy it wont hurt to get bit any more... hell just the other day one bit me and i didnt realize till i saw him hanging there. ive only been scessfull with this twice though. and one down side is their only tame for me anyone else they will bite. as funny as it is still not good :p if anyone has more successfull ways please share

The 1-snake-per-viv rule is a good one. It's lucky you happened to see this happening and stopped it before you had only one snake. If both of them were used to being handled before, they'll calm down again. I'd leave Roxy alone until 2 days after her next regularly scheduled feeding, and then return to consistent, gentle handling. Her behaviour will settle down again.

Handling before feeding is fine once they're settled in and "know" you properly.

Always avoid handling for 48 hours after feeding, apart from gently moving them from feeding tub to tank.
