So Many Morphs...
Please bear with me this little dog deserves your time to read about his story. Wicket named after the Ewok from Star Wars.
One day I went to sent my youngest off to school on the bus and I saw what looked like an animal dragging it's self up my driveway. I go and check to find a dog that can not walk, it is a small little Pommerainian mix and I yell to my husband to bring me our Toy Poodle's Kennel.
He brings it out and I put it in front of the little dog who cowers in the corner it drug it's self to and then I gently put a little broom behind it to push it in the kennel and it goes absolutely savage as soon as the broom touches it. After I get it into the Kennel I bring it into the house and lock the dog in the kennel in a bathroom and call my SPCA(Human Society) Answering machine says leave a message someone will call back after 11am, this was at 8:00am.
I decided to go and see if I could give it water as I was afraid it was near dead the way it drug it's hind end up the driveway. I gently took the kennel top off and it just shook. It did not be mean at all. It was covered in bloody diarrhea and it had so much matted fur I could not feel its body. I got it some water and then it drank and panicked as more bloody diarrhea ran out of it bum. I got my scissors and started cutting out the matts at 2:00pm I could not sit on the floor anymore and had only cut half of the fur off.
I discovered the reason it drug it's self around was because the front right leg and the back left leg were matted together and the skin in the arm pits was tearing! There was a collar matted to its neck which was also tearing that skin as well.
I took it to the SPCA and they told me they had a file on the dog's owners for neglect and abuse, had gone to apprehend it and they had gotten rid of it. What they had done was drop it off on my street. I live in a small city(45,000) but my street is the second busiest street in town and the dog is completely blind!! Due to a vicious attack they allowed to happen when they had a friend and a large dog over, it mauled the little one and repeatedly slammed it's head into the ground, instantly blowing out one eye and damaging the other. Their reaction lock it in the travel kennel they kept it outside in and see if it lived. NO VET!
This poor indoor dog had never been indoors, and I live in Saskatchewan Canada!! That morning when I found it my husband had said no second dog it goes straight to the SPCA, I said fine. When he got home from work he asked about it, I told him everything I had learned and he said "No one will adopt a blind dog and out SPCA is under funded and it is sick, they will put it down in a week, you better call them tomorrow and tell them we will adopt it". So when you see pictures of my beautiful baby know that he is not very old he was just mauled and that is why his eyes look like they do!
Wicket-PeekaPom(Peekanese X Pomerainian), this is how he looked when he came home from the SPCA and vet after anal surgery, antibiotics, microchipping and neutering(he and Dalton).
This is how he is supposed to look.
His favorite way to sleep now that he feels safe.
When we had to put our Toy Poodle Goliath down (see this tread http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93534 ) Wicket became depressed. He stopped eating and would do nothing but lay around and throw up( he has gastric reflux disease and has to eat at least twice a day). The vet recommended two options, anti-depresants or a new dog buddy. I was not ready for another dog but I was not ready to see Wicket suffer again. the hunt for the perfect doggie buddy for Wicket began and Niko won. Upon first meet and greet Niko was excited to have another dog to play with and pounce on Wicket which scared him and he growled and Niko and Niko laid down and rolled over exposing his belly, true submission. Niko instantly had a home. Which apparently was all Niko want was a home with another doggie buddy because he had lived with a middle aged lady who had Niko and another dog, became ill and institutionalized and had to give them up. A friend wanted the other one but not Niko, can't understand why, he was fully house trained, knew sit and come and was great with other dogs, cats and kids. The only thing we had to do was get him fixed.
