Non-Brumated Female Breeding Reception ???'s

medusacoils

Mr. Enigma!
Last year my male Anery developed a severe URI during brumation. I actually thought I might lose him. Top that with a hunger strike of 7 months and at the end of it all, my nerves were shot.

This year I figured I would skip the whole brumation thing. I know there are breeders on this forum that breed successfully without brumation. I have a few questions.

When do you start preparing the females for breeding?

How can you tell if the females are receptive?

Is there anything special you have to do, when you introduce the male?

If you could give me any other pertinent information or advice, I would be greatly appreciative?

Thank you!

Wayne

I didn't brumate. Just waited until each female shed, then stuck her in with the male. If it didn't work on the first try, I tried again about 2-3 days later. Just kept trying every 2-3 days til she settled down. I'm only breeding three females so my view could be skewed, but it's worked so far.

I don't think you view is skewed. It's probably closer to right on. Its that I'm not sure. This is the first time I'm trying to breed without brumation so any advice is welcome and very appreciated!

Don't be too worried. This is my first time breeding EVER!! I've bred goats and horses and ducks, but never snakes. I'm trying out my incubator first with my duck eggs, then the snake eggs will go in (can you tell which I value more lol?)

That pretty much sums it up. I didn't brumate last year, and every year, I've had at least one female I didn't brumate that I eventually bred in the spring anyway. Start introducing the pairs now as I had 3 females shed while in brumation and the males are already courting in earnest and the females will probably accept them withing the next week. Don't give up on a female as I've had them go through several sheds, with the male courting at every introduction, and finally accept him. I did have a couple of females last year whose timing was off. They were bred successfully (they went through the motions and I saw all the evidence), but they then laid their clutches earlier than expected (day 25, give or take) and all the eggs were slugs. But overall, breeding non-brumated corns is easy and you shouldn't have any trouble.

Good advice by inocntkitn187, just try after each shed. Keep an eye on the female, you can usually tell when they are ovulating and feel little egg-like bumps on their belly. They will be most receptive then.

Excellent! Thank you inocntkitn187(don't know your real name), Susan and Jen. You guys are great! I really appreciate the help!

So how long do you pair them together? I just started introducing my males to my females about 4 days ago. I put the males in with the females for only about an hour. I watched as the males chased the females around, they all did that little twitchy dance they do, but no hook ups. I tried again today with the same results.

All of the snakes I am breeding this year are proven, except my opal motley. He is the Virgin and the only male that tried to "force" the female into locking up. She is a bit bigger and quickly kicked him off. All the females shed and their sheds are still in the vivs. I haven't taken them out.

I'm sure it will happen, but I was thinking of trying every 3-4 days or so. Does that sound good? Does the, "leave the male in for an hour" sound right, or should I leave him in longer?

Thanks again!

Wayne

My proven pair (non-brumated) have yet to show much interest in each other. I have been putting them together twice a week for the last 3 weeks. However, the virgin pair hooked up once, on the 4th attempt. I have left them together for an hour and also overnight, neither method has been very successful for me.

I didn't brumate my breeders this year, have three completed breedings. As mentioned earlier, I started introducing pairings after their first February shed. I like to pair them up for no more than an hour. The first breeding hook up occurred within ten minutes. The second pairing took three seperated times togther, although, the first time they were paired, interest was shown by both, so I decided to keep trying every other day. On the third time, they hooked up rather quickly. I know some people will put the snakes together for a few days, but myself, I only put them togther for about an hour, and if nothing happens, I try another day. Last year was the same, and all my pairs successfully bred and I had minimal slugs from five clutches (4 slugs).
