Major Setback, But More Pairings to Ease the Hurt

Susan

Go Ahead, Make My Day!
Duke, my cinder male and the central participant of several projects I had planned for this year, has suffered a prolapse hemipenes that, despite my best efforts to help correct, needed to be amputated. As a result, he will not be able to provide his genes this year for the several major projects I had planned for him. Ashok, my other cinder male, is just too young and small to take his place. I'm having to now quickly decide on alternate males for several females, but should still have some interesting offspring for 2010.

On a good note, I've had several pairs hook up recently, most of them today (it's a rainy day which corn snakes seem to find quite "stimulating"), with several more that are close to mating.

First pair up is Althea (lavender motley) and Phillipe (dilute anery motley) (Photo taken last week before they mated).
Next is Ornella (Upper Keys het cinder) and Apollo (bloodred het anery), which I had to quickly decide on to pair with this female as she was to be mated with Duke, followed by Dianne (charcoal het amel bloodred) and Achilles (bloodred het anery).
Lastly is Phoenix (amel Sunkissed) and Daytona (amel stripe het hypo) (Sorry for the poor quality but my camera just wouldn't focus well on amel snakes in the lower light of the snake room). Daytona is the quick replacement for Duke that I chose (he had JUST shed and still had a few pieces that I took off after they were finished). Just in case Duke was able to fertilize a few eggs (he was with Phoenix when he prolapsed), I will be able to readily identify them as Phoenix is a virgin breeder.

I am sorry to hear about Duke. I think that Althea and Phillipe are stunning and can not wait to see what you get from those two.

Oh no! I hope he's okay! (No one here is finding the weather stimulating, unfortunately...)

I'm so sorry to hear about Duke's troubles. I wish you well with your readjusted pairings.

I personally think Phoenix and Daytona are gorgeous!

Poor Duke! Did he lose both or just one?

Just one, so if he does well, he should be able to still do some breeding next year. Of course, I'm assuming his other one is still there as he was purchased as an established breeder...

I do hope so, Susan. I hate to ask, but just what are the immediate steps for a prolapsed male? I'm thinking moist paper towels and maybe a strong sugar solution to try to keep the hemi moist and to shrink it?

Oh Susan, I'm sorry that happen to you. Hopefully things will be back on track for you next year. Your other pairing are stunning though. Good luck with them all. :)

Sorry to hear of your run of bad luck with Duke. You did put some lovely pairs together in spite of it all. They are all quite stunning.

That is the proper immediate response, which I tried. In many cases, that and a little time will correct the problem, but Duke's hemi not only didn't reduce in size, it got larger and darker in color. An excellent thread on the subject was posted by Oren Here, which helped me a great deal.

Susan, I am SO sorry. I hope Duke will pull thru this with his general helath intact, and hopefully will be ready to go next year. Fingers crossed!

I do like the pairings you posted -- I think they will produce beautiful pippies, if not the ones you had originally intended.

Sorry to hear that Susan, hopefully the other one is intact, I have one breeder that does fine with just one.

What did you have planned for him?

Awww, I'm tempted to send you a male but I guess that's not enough time to quarantine. :awcrap:

Thanks very much for the thought, but besides the quarantine time, two of the females have already been bred to other males (amel Sunkissed X amel stripe het hypo and Upper Keys het cinder X bloodred het anery), another should accept the male chosen for her within the next couple of days (dilute anery motley X granite het motley or stripe), and the last female is in deep blue so should be ready in the not too distant future (hypo het cinder X Sunkissed het hypo or dilute anery motley, whichever is not with another female at the time).

Very cool second choices! I am hoping to do an Amel Cinder X Sunkissed next year. Maybe when that Cinder male comes around for you in 2011 we could swap triple het babies to widen the gene pool. :)

Susan...that sucks! I know how frustrating it can be....had my dilute anery pos het lava lose one of his hemipenes a few years ago. Snake does fine and breeds with his other....but no fertile eggs yet. Hope you have better luck.

I am hoping to do an Amel Cinder X Sunkissed next year.
With just a plain sunkissed???? You need need an amel sunkissed....Besides Susan's female....I know someone else who has one that they could loan....:sidestep:

So sorry to hear that, Susan. I hope Duke heals up fast and does well in the future!

So, no cinder babies this year??? ~sniffs~ That makes me very sad :( I was on the wait list for a Duke-baby ~sighs~

I purchased a sunglow some years back that already had lost one of his hemi penis. Then just about time to breed and during a feeding just got to excited and popped the other out and lost that one to sometime later. How sad to by a guy with no man hood lol. So I sold him to someone for a pet. Last I check he is still doing well after all this time. These things just happen sometimes. Sorry about your luck. Hope next year he works out for you. You should think about keeping him away from the sent of any female from now until then (far away).
