Retaining Sperm Question.....

Can a female that was bred last year and had a successful clutch (9 good eggs out of 9) retain some/any sperm to have fertile eggs the following year without being bred the following year?

I left out brumating since I wouldn't think that would play into the results too much.

I it is possible and has happened, although it is quite rare. In most cases of retained sperm, it is a second clutch that gets fertilized from the mating(s) for the first clutch.

It can also happen when a female is placed with a male to late in the season. She will keep it til the next season.

Any other breeders care to answer the question with their experiences?

Well

I will have to say NO
It hasnt happened to me yet. I know others think they can, but I dont.
If it did, it would be VERY rare,I think someone like Rich maybe should answer this, someone who has had eggs in the 1000s.I did obtain a new male, that so far has really impressed me. He will breed and eat in shed through breeding season. He has a different personality then any other cornsnake I have ever owned.I will definetly be keeping back some of his young. If it were to happen,it would take a rare snake like this imo and thats just a guess!

I've had that happen with one WC garter snake, we'd had her for a little over a year & in that time she'd had no contact with another snake, yet she gave birth to a litter of 11 babies. That however, so far, is my only experience with breeding or baby snakes.

Just a update: She is growing in size and refused food today. i can count 6 eggs for sure in her and there is room toward the tail for a few more I can't count good.

Will she stop eating for any kind of egg fertile or not?

From what I understand they will refuse food whether the eggs are fertile or not. I have heard of retained sperm causing a clutch the next year but it was a guy who tried to double clutch and she (the snake) decided it should wait lol. Keep us posted.

I have had one do this 2 years in a row now to me. That is what I was meaning in post #3.

So my next question is this......I am guessing slugs and fertile eggs feel the same in the females belly? I mean they feel exactly like the ones last year.
