1st Time Snake Keeper

Hello everyone,

My name is Jay and im a first time snake keeper. I have a female albino corn. Im having a couple worries and concerns. I'm sure they are nothing but as a new daddy I just want everything to be perfect. To start I have a 10 gallon tank with a UTH and an overhead heater. My problems are as follows... On the hot side i can only get it to 79-80.2F and on the cool is 70-71.4F. I know its supposed to be between 80-85 and 70-75 but these numbers seem a couple degrees off. What should I do when I have these two standard forms of heating.

Second problem is I bought her during her shedding phase and with where I'm at in Michigan the air is cold and crisp. The highest I've gotten the humidity in the cage is 37...as it should be 50%. Any ideas? Im using aspen as bedding. Id rather not use Reptibark as I've read on here that it can contain a lot of dust.

I know I'm probably freaking out for no reason but i just want my little angels home to be perfect. Here are a couple pictures of my setup. Unfortunately she's in her hide and you cant see her. P.S-I got a bubbling water dish today to raise the humidity, doesn't seem to move it anywhere.

P.S.S - shop owner says, light on - 10h, light off -14h....when I turn the light off for the night, temp drops to about 68-69. I bought night heat lamp today, doesn't keep it as hot as the normal lamp does at all. About 2 degree's lower then normal/day temp. Please advise on night lamp use as well... Thank You!

Hi Jay, is the temp probe just hanging in the viv? Put it under the aspen over where the heater is and see what the temp is there. You shouldn't really need a light.

As Alan said the probe should go underneath the substrate, not hanging above it. That will give you vastly different temperatures. Also to raise the humidity you could either lightly mist the tank a couple times a day with a spray bottle, and / or put a damp towel (or any cloth really) on top of the tank, as the mesh lets out a fair amount of humidity and heat. Hope this helps, and good luck with your first shed. Let us know if anything goes wrong.

The heat lamp is burning off any humidity you are trying to add to the tank...

try one of these:

Small ziplock disposable container filled with damp moss. Cut a hole in the side for snake access. The snake will go in and out as it needs to in order to keep his skin moist for a proper shed.

If I were you, I'd put the probe from your thermometer under the substrate on the "hot side" and see what you get. During the winter it can be hard to keep the "cool side" warm. I just don't worry about it, but one thing you can do is just try to get the room temp where your snake is a little higher.

By the way, covering your screen with a damp towel is a good way to grow mold. Mist the inside of your tank with water from a spray bottle instead.

Are you using a thermostat or rheostat to control your uth at all?

I read the OP's post to mean she is blue and he wants to make sure nothing goes wrong...

yes, I understand but I think that sometime new owners overreact when it come to the humindity of the viv. Hatchling are more prone to have problems but if it ain't broke don't fix it theory come to my mind here. that's all.

Hey guys, thanks for the fast response. I've had her 3 days now, and she's just in the middle of a shed. So no, i haven't seen a "problem" with her so far. Like I said in the post, im probably over-reacting cause I am a new owner. I just want her home to be perfect.
