2 corns together

BEFORE YOU SAY IT!!!!

Ive read on these forums and various opinions. and the majority seem to say "one corn per enclosure".

But my qustion is...what if you WANT to breed? i currently have a female..if i bought a male put them together would they evently breed by next year (asumeing everything goes fine). if one were to keep 2 snakes together anyway, what would you tell someone what the proper precedure would be?

no smart a** responces please.

They may or may not breed... but it's not worth putting them through the stress of being housed together. If you want to breed, follow normal breeding procedure and only put the together for copulation, then separate them when they're done.

Maybe you should ask the guy that cohabbed two breeding pairs this season and lost both his males...One female ATE her mate, the other just killed hers.

Yes, and that guy was an experianced breeder who really did nothing wrong. Those snakes were only put together to breed.

It's just better to keep them separate except for mating. I suspect that if you had a HUGE enclosure you could cohab with greater safety, because you could make sure there were several equally desirable warm hides, cool hides, and so on, but in anything smaller than a truly enormous vivarium I wouldn't try it. When I say huge, I mean the kinds of enclosures that would be suitable for a burm or retic, because that way if the snakes didn't want to come near each other, you could set it up so they never had to, except to mate, which would re-create the wild situation.

Unless you are set up to house them that way, I don't think it's a good idea.

In the other cohab thread that you are participating in, Dritzz80 suggested that you should do a search about cohab or cohabitation. Read what has been said by the others and then you decide for yourself.

I know you are looking for someone to tell you it is ok. Most will tell you it is not. You decide for yourself.

Well, considering it's longest dimension is only a foot longer than an adult corn snakes average length, no, that's too small for the kind of enclosure wstphal is talking about.

Correct, Vickie. I had in mind something more like 10 feet by 10 feet with several warm zones, several waterbowls, many many hides, and things to climb as well.

I know some zoos cohabitate but they use a much larger length dimention and at least 3 warm hides and a dozen other cool hides. a good size for two corns i would say could be a 150gal, but if it was only 16 to 20 inches high and the rest was floorspace. length being the best.

you can do it, you just have to be ready for them to be eaten as well as understand that they need their space from one another :p

but like wstphal says, many hides many water bowls many warm zones many climb spots. and when i say many at least 3-4

gl :)

why do pet stores and severl breeders keep about 5-6 babys at a time in a small enclosre no bigger then a foot long wen there trying to sell them...if it were THAT dangerous...why would they do that??????

I think you should do it. Ignore what others are saying, they don't know what they are talking about. Do It!!

Because they don't care about the welfare of the snakes. They are only interested in the money they can make by making the best use of space. They don't plan to keep them for long. Do you really think using a pet store for an example was a smart choice?

lol most pet stores get them for dirt cheap or just resell them for tons, losing one or two isnt a big deal to them when they are marking up the price 200-300%

): they usually just dont care.
And i will admit cannibalism in corns does happen, but it isnt THAT common, and isnt well known in the species.

Over all, here i think we just recommend against it because we love snakes and no one wants to take any chances :) no matter the cost.

but trying not to preach (i deleted my wall of text lol)

get a nice big ol' long and wide cage and set it up right, get hold of your local zoo if you want as well, they have great tips and info :)

Ditto to this...

Petshops are trying to maximize profits. They don't care about the welfare of the animals. And any breeder who would do this is someone to steer way clear of imo!!

As I just said in your other thread (and why the heck are there 2 threads by the same op on the very same subject anyway?)

Imagine that someone locked you in a house with someone you hate, and forced you to stay in that house with that person forever. Made you share a room for the rest of your life. No escape. And this is someone you can't stand for ANY length of time. Do you think your health might suffer?

That is EXACTLY what you want to do to two innocent animals that count on you to do what's right for them.

it was an acsident, I ment to start my own thread but then I realised I pressed reply by acsident and then everyone started comenting on both lol
