2nd regurge

I fed Simon an extra-tiny pink yesterday after a 9-day hiatus from his first regurge. I really had my hopes up, as it all seemed to go well... left him every bit alone for a few days of resting and digesting. My heart sank tonight when I woke up to hear him regurging.

How long can young snakes go without a properly digested meal?

He still seems strong, so I'm hoping he'll be okay for the next 8 or 9 days, at which point I'll try a pinky head. If that doesn't work, it'll be a trip to the vet to check for parasites and such.

Wish me luck. :/

A second regurge is very serious.

I would recommend not handling Simon at all for the next couple of weeks. Also, stick with the plan of waiting 8-10 days, then feeding Simon a pink head or the other half of the pink.

If you haven't already, go here and read Kathy Love's FAQ on Regurge Treatment.

Yes, I'm definitely following Kathy Love's regurge schedule in hopes that it will get Simon back on the right track.

As a side note, would it hurt to put some grapefruit seed extract in his water in the meantime, in the case that it is a bug? Try tubing NutriBac? Or is it not time for desperate measures yet?

I would say that it's most definitely time for drastic measures. Two regurges in a row is very serious. I have no experience with GSE, but ordering some Nutribac should be the first thing on your agenda this morning. You can get it from Kathy's website. Do you have a herp vet in your area?

Have you rechecked the temperatures? You can get GSE from any good health-food shop, while you're waiting for the nutribac. (You can't use both together though) Good luck.

I went back and read your first couple post on Simon and noticed you got him from a pet store. Not saying all pet stores are bad but I would suggest taking him to a vet and having him checked for internal parasites. There is no reason for a snake that size to regurge an extra small pinky unless some thing else is wrong.

What are your temps on the cool and warm side?

Edit: I was posting while you were posting. Let us know how the vet visit goes. :)

Hey guys,

I took him to the vet this morning. He is suggesting that I wait ten days and give it one more try before we do anything aggressive. Simon hasn't defecated since I've owned him, so they couldn't do a fecal test for parasites unless they gave him a cloacal flush, which the vet thought would stress him even more than regurgitating at the moment - same for any attempts at oral or catheter medications. He said that at 10 grams Simon isn't losing weight too fast, and that reducing stress for the time being would be best, while we try to get him to digest at least one meal. So... now it's a waiting game until October 25th, when I'll try a pinky head. I am also going to order some Nutribac to add to his next meal attempt. Hoping he'll just hang in there until then....

You can always put the Nutribac in his drinking water. Or- I don't think anyone has done this- make a little bath of it in room temp water and let him slither in it for 15 minutes or so, then rinse well. He's bound to lick some up by tongue flicking!

Hey all,

Just fed Simon half a pinky, warmed and dusted with Nutribac (that was kind of messy...).

He took it just fine and I'm hoping for the best... wish us luck!

Finally some good news!

It's been almost four days since Simon's last feed, and no regurge. I really think the NutriBac may have done the trick. He gets another half-pink on Friday... hopefully all will go well then, too, and he can get to growing!

Thanks to everyone for the advice and support.

I am so glad to hear positive news!

My advice now is to keep the meals small for a while.

I was really relieved. I am definitely following Kathy Love's regurge schedule, but I might even keep him on a half of a pink for an extra week just to be safe...

Don't forget that when you go back to whole pinks, you can feed him a whole pink cut into thirds for a couple meals, then a whole pink cut in two pieces. It's a little messy, but so easy to digest. I just snip them in half after thawling.
