2nd Surprise Clutch ???'s

heatherfeather30

It's Duck Season!
First post so be patient. My 3 year old "females" turned out to be a male/female. Female is normal Okeetee & Male is a GORGEOUS ghost with lots of pink coloration.
She laid her first clutch of 8 nice eggs on May 7th. I was surprised at how long it took for her to "perk back up". She has had 3 good feedings since. I new she was full of eggs again because of her behavior 3 weeks ago. She lashed at me and tried to bite me when I went in to transport her to her feeding container. She did this with her first clutch too. She normally is the sweetest thing in the world!
A local cornsnake breeder said he never had a double clutch without copulation. When she refused her last 2 meals he told me he thought she may be sick. Instinct told me to put her egg laying container back in her tank and she took right to it. Tonight she is laying again... 8 so far... and still contracting.
Now for my questions:
(#1)Eggs look just as healthy as last ones laid. Will they be fertile? (I still plan on incubating them)
(#2)How will my "Beanie" fair health wise? She looked pretty lifeless after her last clutch. This is only 6weeks since her last clutch... and with that first clutch it took a good 2 weeks for her to post-shed, move around normally, and eat 2 fuzzies. I am afraid of what to expect this time. Her other 2 meals were 2 adult mice each time.
(#3)Will this be it? No more surprise clutches? The male was removed after I saw them copulating. AND since then her behavior has done a 180 degree change. She was my baby... and out around my neck all the time. I never had a single problem with her until she was bred.
ANY INFORMATION on this would be greatly appreciated. I was caught off-guard not once BUT NOW TWICE. She was my best buddy up until she copulated. Since then she has been "wicked"! I want my buddy back:eek:(
Sincerely, Heather ([email protected])

Snakes definately double clutch without being reintroduced to a male. I had it happen with a 3 year old last year.

I'll try to answer some of your questions to the best of my ability. There are others who are more experienced and will add to this I'm sure.

1. Yes. There is a great possibility they're fertile. Snakes can retain sperm for later use. They usually lay a 2nd clutch about the time the 1st clutch is beginning to hatch.

2. Get your snake to drink when you're sure she's done laying. Hold her while she drinks if you need to and leave the water right next to her. They get dehydrated during the process. Feed smaller meals more often. ( I use hopper or weanling sized mice). Begin offering them shortly after she lays and every 4-5 days afterward until her weight begins to come back up. I don't go up to full sized mice until she's had several smaller mice. Then I still feed the regular sized mice about every 5-6 days until she looks good.

3. This should be the last clutch as long as you keep the male and female separated.

Good luck. By the way, let us know how the 1st clutch comes out. They should be hatching soon. My clutch was laid on May 2 and I'm expecting hatching in a week or less. Yours should hatch slightly after that.

Thank you for that info. After the last clutch I listened to a local snakebreeder word for word... and I think it wasn't the best information.

I removed clutch of 8 a bit ago. I swore there were 11 at 3am but maybe my eyes weren't seeing things accurately. Some of the eggs look thin and pinkish is color, and most are spotted with white. I don't think Beanie had the proper calcium to produce this 2nd clutch (healthwise) as the first clutch.

She didn't bite me this time:eek:) AND... she took 3 small fuzzies F/T (warmed) ravenously. I am glad I did this. She is now perked-up considerably. I was told to wait on feeding the last time until she had her post-shed. Well it came a time when her color/energy was so poor that I thought she was dying. SO THANK YOU FOR ENCOURAGING ME TO FEED HER and also getting her to drink. I put water in the bottom of her feeder container and she lapped most of it up. Funny... it was probably flavored with mice.

Will post pictures of her first clutch due in approximately 2 weeks. Will have to read-up on how to do that. Also will post about 2nd clutch in regards to how they look as time goes by. First clutch looking like white golf balls. When I put these eggs in the hovabator, they looked completely different. Smaller, more oblong, and like I mentioned, much different in coloration.

Heather

I'm glad things are going better and she's eating for you. The eggs almost sound like they could be slugs (not fertile), but incubate them anyway just in case. I always incubate any that I'm not sure about until they either hatch or go competely bad.
