40 gallon viv question(s)

Called around various stores checking prices on vivs for my new snake {she's in a 10g now} and PetCo's having their dollar a gallon sale. So I think instead of a 20g long, I'll get a 40g. I've only glanced them over in the past. If it doesn't come with the sliding/snap into place screen cover, are those "sit on top" covers okay to use with a snake? I've never had an escape, knock on wood, and I never want one. What's the best type of clips to use with this type of screen cover? Is there any way to put an lock on it? I live pretty far from stores, so I'd like to get everything I need for such a set up while I'm down there. Or am I really better off with the sliding/snap into place screen covers?

I have a sit-on cover for Ala. Not as nice as the slider the BTS's tank came with, but with for clips on the corners and window weather stripping (just unstick one side) around the lid, it makes a very snug fit. And Ala likes to get up in between the ledge and the lid and try to get out, but no way! :)

I got the weather stripping from Home Depot or Lowes. Very cheap!

I currently have a tank lid that sits on top the tank that I've been using since I got Severus (he's 7 months old). I use 4 of these clips (one on each corner) and have never had any issues/escapes.

Every once in a while I have to bend them to have them fit tighter, but that's easy.

I have a regular 30 gallon with these clips. I however use three on the front and three on the back. The bigger the lid the wider apart the clips will be and I don't like having a large space they could possible squeeze out from under. I do love my 40 gallon Zilla Critter Cage with sliding locking lid. It gets a little bit of a pain in the butt having to take all those clips off every time I want to hold my snake or feed it.

I have done away with tanks all together now and have given them to my frogs (still use clips on normal tanks with the frogs too). My snakes are now in a rack and I actually like it better and I think my snakes like it better. I had their big tanks set up with lots of plants and hides. But since moving to the rack, a lot of my more skittish snakes and biters have calmed down sooooo much! Just a little something to think about if your collection every grows lol!

Yeah...I forgot to mention that he's still in a 10g. Was just showing the brand of clips I use. Gotta upgrade him to something bigger soon. :)

Those are the clips I use and I love them. Thanks everyone for your input. I ended up getting a 29 gallon instead, and while I would have loved a 40g I'm not even sure yet how I'm going to work the 29g in the room lol.

All of our lids (for the snakes who are in aquariums...we have a few in Sterilite) are sit-on, and the only ones that are clipped down are the boas. The others have various weights and books on the tops of them, and *touch wood* we've never had an issue.

The frog viv is a 20l with the metal mesh lid, and while we have clips, I discovered the cat could knock them off too easily. I wasn't too worried about the leopards pushing the lid aside, but I didn't trust the cat, so I have bands of double sided velcro strapping all the way around the viv and the lid (from Home Depot). Not pretty, but it works.

For a second you almost made me have a heart attack. I thought you meant you had Sterilite with just sit-on lids.

But in case you don't already, I wouldn't trust the lids that come with the Sterilite to keep a snake in. I made that mistake with a plastic shoe box sized one and have lost a very very important snake to my breeding plans. Never again! Clips all over the place now and inside tight fitted racks for me lol!

Sounds like me. I lost a very nice female due to using just the lids on a sterilite container. I now have a rack system but that's for my ball pythons. My corn is still spoiled in her 45g long.

However, I have used tanks for reptiles for 8+ years and have never had an escape. I use the lids that lay on top with the lip hanging over. Currently I have one tank, 45g long and I only use two clips.
