50 gallon tank....

When I purchased one month old snake this summer he immediately went into a 15 gallon tank (two caves, warm/cool ends, Repti Bark substrate, branches to climb with leaves to hid in). Followed the The Munson Plan (feeding schedule) found on this site since day one. The snake in now just under 40 grams. Active and healthy. I now have a chance at a 50 gallon tank with a mesh top for very little money. Is this tank way to big for a corn snake?

Sounds like a great set up in the 15 gal. I think if you have space to store the 50 gal tank for a while you could get it. I think it would work just fine for an adult, and would probably be helpful if you plan on breeding at some point. I'm no expert, but if it was me, and I had the space I would get the tank if it's a good deal and wait till the snake get's a little bigger.

Also, I see your new like me. Glad to have you on the site, don't be afraid to post things, we LOVE pictures, when you get a chance you could post some :D

I think a 50 gallon is more thank than you need for a snake that is not even a year old yet. In fact, it is more than you need for an adult corn...but I don't think the extra room will be bad for the adult...though it may intimidate your snake at his current size.

If you put enough hides, and other nick knaks in there to minimize the appearance of vast openness...it may help. A busy and full 50 gallon tank would maybe even be a dreamland for your little one.

Keep in mind how much more substrate you will need...and the larger UTH...and all the extra hides, fake plants, and wooden structures needed to make it not look so empty.

If you have anywhere to put that 50G, grab it! But it's probably too big for your little snake right now, unless you follow Nroc's advice & put lots of hides & things in it. But you will want the 50G later. Maybe for this snake as an adult. Maybe for another snake, or another species of snake. So if you can stand having it as clutter, or if you have a basement or attic, take it.

Or you could buy it and buy something else to put in it! ;) I think that if you really put tons of hides and maybe more than one water source you'll be okay.

GRAB it!!!! If you really think it's too big I'll trade you my 35gal. for it!!LOL seriously though, I don't know why you wouldn't. If you have the room for it I'd say grab it:)

I'd devide the 50 into two roughly 25 so I could have 2 snakes in it!

That's not how aquaria work... putting a divider in the middle of a 20 gal tank will not turn it into two 10gal tanks, sorry. I believe someone said a 55gal tank divides into about a 20gal tank on each side, so if you wanted to put a divider in and put two snakes in you could, but it wouldn't be considered a 25gal.

That's why she said ROUGHLY 25 galons per side Pepper. The volume of the devided sides should be about 25 gallons if it were filled with water. I think the concern comes in with the surface area on the bottom of each side, it might be less than a standard 25 gal tank (if there is such thing)

I keep Thumper in a 55 and I would almost say it is too small for him. I do have a lot going on in there and the fact that he's fairly large for a corn might be why I say that, but definitely grab that tank. Just get some vines and plants and basically cover one end so it will shrink the tank down visually for your little one.

Doesn't look as big as one with vast open floor space.

THANK YOU

Thanks for responding guys. Lots of valuable ideas. I will get the tank but will wait until the summer to exchange tanks. By then I can get ideal tree branches to take advantage of the extra height for a second layer. Even more horizontal space for the snake to explore! Don't mind spending the money for more hides etc since they will end up being used for many many years.

Cheers

Got it!

I bought the 50 gallon tank. I then contacted Kathy Love and asked her when and how I should transfer the snake into the new tank stress free. She figured now would work. I followed all her suggestions to the letter and here is the result. One thing for sure he is much more active than in the past. The snake is just under 40 grams, ~23 inches long and seven months old. The tank is on an island between the kitchen and dining room. The front (image 1) is on the dining room side.
