A cold weather snake?

I'm having...well, not exactly a problem with my 1-year old corn, Plissken. It's more puzzling than anything.

We have our tank so that it has one hot side and a cold side, etc, with hides on either side. The hot side is 85 degrees, and the cold side is usually 70 degrees (or even colder).

The strange thing is...he only hangs out on the cold side, even when he is digesting a giant meal! We've tried turning the heat down a little. We've also tried switching the hides, turning the tank around, moving all the foliage around, etc. He just won't go to the warm side, and whenever I pick him up, he is sluggish and very cold to the touch!

Sometimes I will put him into the warm hide (whether he likes it or not) and he just sneaks back over to the cold side when I'm not looking!

He's had no health problems as far as I can tell, but I am a bit worried anyway.

Any ideas?

Thanks everybody!

If you're providing him with the right temps, and he is healthy, then don't worry about it!

Snakes are good at taking care of themselves if you give them the right resources. He knows what's good for him, in this case.

I never heard of something like that, but just like Emily1188 said she should be ok, my snakes like to hide at the hot side in their coconut all day

My baby is like that also.. he rather be cool/cold than nice and warm.. I had a heat lamp for ( yes I know its not the best heat source it was all I could afford at the time and at least he had a source of something ) but even then he stayed cool... Idk they are some strange lil creatures I tell ya...

Carpathian, when I was keeping snakes and lizards and such, back in the 1970's and 80's, and didn't know any better,...I used no external heat source at all. The herps were the same temp as everyone else in the house. Year round.

And eggs were in vermiculite or decayed moist hardwood mulch or sand....at whatever temperature the garage was.

It's a miracle they evolved without us around to pamper them, eh? LOL.

I'm curious, and surprised,....I cannot believe turning the tank around had no effect. A wise old-timer named Wade once told me that inverting direction/orientation of a herp would help with everything from regurging to butt-munching.

Yeah, it's very strange. I played with the temps in the tank, turned the tank, and rearranged the foliage/hides/water dish in every conceivable combination, and he just absolutely HATES the warm side! All he does is hide on the cold side and look sort of miserable. :(

Like I said, though, he eats voraciously and is otherwise ok, so... I guess there's no point in worrying!

Good news, all! We tried moving the tank to a different spot in the room and this has apparently done the trick. We woke up and he was in the warm hide.

I don't understand, but I'm happy that this worked. Thanks again everybody for your help!

Wonderful, Carpathian. Maybe he just wanted to be able to see the TV better, as well as the activity in the kitchen.

My Humphrey mostly seems to prefer the cool side of his viv as well. I haven't worried about it because I thought since he has the choice he can move back & forth as he prefers. He does prefer the warm side for about 24 hours after meals, though. When I got him his viv came with one hide on the cool side, so I just added a second hide on the warm side but he isn't using it.

Blessed be,
Betsy
