so i hope someone can give me a little advice here...

1 - as of late my snake has been spending most of his time underneath the bedding (hot or cold side doesnt matter) and not on/in his branch, or next to his water dish like he usually does. is there a reason for this change?

2 - because of this i worry that he will burrow on the hot side and come into contact with the heating pad and burn himself...is there some way that i can still have the heating pad but have it so it doesnt come into direct contact with him?

thank you.

1. Shed? Could also be a new vibration or smell you don't notice.

2. Um, a rheostate or dimmer should already be in use to keep it at 85F...

Probably going to shed soon. This is normal behavior and not really much to worry about.

There is a problem with your set up, if your worried about a snake getting burned by a heating pad. That means your not controlling the temperature of the pad with a dimmer (rheostat) or thermostat. Your heating pad should never get hotter than 90F (85F is best, but 90F is still in range). So you may want to alter your set up a bit.

Rheostats are the cheaper alternative. You can make one yourself by spending about $10 at Home Depot or by buying one at PetCo for about $15.

Thermostats are going to run you about $25+

well I have a thermometer and it stays around the 85 range but thats just on top and I'm worried if he goes underneath it will be too hot.

You could put the thermometer right down on the heat mat & check, then you can make adjustments or stop worrying.
