A cure for loose fitting lids

The two lids I have bought to cover the tanks we are keeping our snakes in have fit very loose. When you clip it on to the tank there was about 1/4" of play that it could be moved and although I thought nothing of it at first our very first snake did, and he exploited that weakness to go on a 5 day walkabout in my son's room. While he was missing I decided to make the lid a little tighter fitting so this would never happen again. Here is a picture of the style of lid we have.

As you can see it is held by non adjustable clips. Two in the front and two in the back. The back two are semi-adjustable but they must be adjusted everytime you take the lid off. Anyhoo, I fixed the situation by going to home depot and buying some closed cell foam that is made for weatherstipping. It has an adhesive side that I adhered to the very top of the tank around the perimeter. Voila. Now the lid must be pushed firmly down to lock in place, and there is absolutely no place for escape. Here is a pic of the foam in place.

I hope this helps those who have purchased the same style of lid or are maybe going to purchase it. Thanks for looking.

Good idea, the only thing I would worry about is a snake getting at the sticky side with the adhesive and have the thing get stuck to them, but it looks like it would definitely work if done carefully.

Yes, if you are careful not to let the adhesive side overhang into the viv it will be just fine. Otherwise it would be one big sticky trap.

Cool :) It works. I was planning on doing the same thing on my custom viv when I build it for dealing with the gap in the glass doors. So glad to see someone else come up with the same idea.

I'm afraid my little gal would manage to get to the adhesive. We solved the problem with 2 things...both heavy reference books she hasn't figured out how to lift yet. (She spent about 7 weeks loose in the house the first winter we had her.)

The sticky part would really scare me away from using this, but it is a good idea. What if you hot glues it.

Lol i got the sick of my hatchling getting out of the lid. I have now siliconed and taped the whole top up ...... MWHAHAHAHAH now it cant get out.

Hmm good question, i never gave much thought to that !!!!!

Lol J/K yeah its got sliding doors in the front with a lock. The snake was just very clever and always managed to find a way to open the lid.
