A little help

We put our male Hypo het. Anery in with our female Anery and he went right on top of her. Every time he wrapped he tail around her's he would squirm away. I'm assuming that she isn't ready yet.
We had previously put them together 2 weeks ago and he didn't even acknowlege her presence. So we are definatly seeing mating behavior.
She ate last week and this morning when I removed them and put them back in their tanks I noticed that one of them pooped. I don't think it is his because he has refused food for the last 2 weeks. Is this normal for a male not to eat during breeding season? My son is a little worried. Do we have to wait until she "clears" her system to be ready to mate?
How many days should I wait to put them together again?
This is our first time breeding snakes. So any help is appreciated.

I've never bred myself but know its perfectly normal for a male to go on fasting periods during the breeding season, very normal :), dont worry

Also I've read elsewhere that about every 3 days or so is good for reintroducing them, as this allows time for the male to recover his sperm supplies :shrugs:

Thanks for the reply. I don't think he has to recover. He hasn't been able to do anything yet. She keeps getting away. My son says that "He just has to keep pestering her until she gets tired of it and gives in" He has no idea of how close to real life that statement is.:crazy02:

after i seperate and feed them i reintroduce them 24 hours later you just need to make sure the feeding response is gone.
its normal for the male to go off feed for months during the breeding season.
i would just leavee them together until the next shceduled feeding it sounds as thoughthe male is interested but that hes probally a virgin and sometimes it takes a little bit for them to figure out what to do.

It sounds like your female might be not quite ready to receive the male yet, although if his response to her this time is anything to go by, she may be getting close.
The way I do it is, if the male shows little to no interest, then I leave it a week or so before re-introducing him. If he's showing a lot of interest but she is not receptive, then I re-introduce at 3-5 day intervals. There will come a point when she is receptive and he is willing...lol

I give my pairs about 48hrs after feeding before introducing them, to allow them to digest, others may do it differently, but I don't think you have to let the female clear her system before mating, just be prepared for a clean up if neccessary..lol

How old is your Son? Sounds like he might be wise before his time.....

Hope that helps some,
Best wishes,

Here is a quick update. My son put the 2 of them together last night and every time I checked on them they were laying in opposite ends of the tub. He didn't even show any interest in her. I told my son that he should put them back in their viv's, because maybe we missed the breeding time, because of the lack of interest. I went upstairs to say goodnight and my son says something yucky was in the tub and he didn't know what it was. I looked in and found "spillage", there was no blood though. When I told him that it was a pretty good sign that they mated, he couldn't stop smiling. He is 11 and his snakes are his life.
So should we try and put them together again? Is it ok to feed her now, it is that time in her feeding schedule, or should I wait to feed her?
Thanks for any help. This is a great forum for information.

I'd go ahead and feed them, and put them back together a couple days after feeding. He thinks he's excited now wait til she lays a clutch lol. Then it's a two month wait for them to hatch. Lots of time for the excitement to build :*)

It is very common for a snake to poop when you try to breed her. Usually, this is done when the female does NOT want to be bred. It frequently, but NOT always, turns the male off for that evening. It would me! I just clean it out immediately, and let them go at it if he still shows interest. If not, I try a couple of days later. The poop may mean nothing more than she needed to go, it was a new cage, and she wanted to be "lighter" to avoid the male.

Males OFTEN stop eating for 1-2 (or 3!) months during breeding. Younger/smaller males are more likely to eat that older/larger males. They'll stop as long as females smell good in the room or they decide it has been long enough. Either way, that's why males need to be fed well in the spring BEFORE breeding season starts. Don't exopect him to lose much weight at all, though, if everything else is OK with him.
