A new baby :)

I got another new baby today and I'm praying everything works out this time but I have more knowledge this time too. I had got one Oct. 22 but it died about 4 weeks after and involving a regurge. The whole story is here:

The pet store ordered me a new normal baby corn and replaced at no cost which is good but I still miss my first baby. And this one is sooooo much twitchier. It curls up like it's gonna strike when a hand goes in the cage.

I left it alone for several hours after gettin it today and then later put my hand in to see the reaction and then an hour later slowly and gently tried lifting it but only for a couple mins and now I'll leave it alone again for awhile to let it settle. I was just checkin to see if it would bite because I was readin some stuff about that on the other threads. This one is soo much more active then the last. It only went in the hiding spot for a bit but other than that keeps comin out and checkin things out. And for the few minutes I held it, it was hard to hold onto cause it's so small and keeps jetting out like a missle. I dont know if it thinks it can fly or what.

It's cute though too cause even when it goes in it's home it lifts its head off the ground and peaks outside like its watching us. I'll have to try and get a pic sometime, hopefully it keeps the habit.

Congrads on the new snakelet.

But IMO, you should allow that baby several days without bothering it to allow it to adjust. To keep bothering it at the beginning will simply stress it and you may have another regurge on your hands :(

Having just got a new hatchling after five years (ours are grown), I understand how hard it it to leave them alone, but you'll have years to play with her, so allow her this time to adjust.

One thing I forgot to mention. The guy at the store said they had a couple problems with a couple of the hatchling they got with regurges and so on. He said they started feeding these babies just pieces of mice to start since they're so small. Instead of like 1 whole pinkie a week maybe 1-2 times a week but just the head or something. I wanna know other comments on this. And yes, I'm going to leave her alone and let her get adjusted.

A question though, how do I feed her in a seperate container or smaller container or something if I can't touch her? And if she's hiding when I go to feed is it safe to assume she'll just find the pinkie on her own or do I need to do something? After the last one not eating and dying I'm scared to feed in case she also refuses.

I was always taught to feed in separate containers, but I know there are successful folks on here who don't, so that's up to you.

Just give her a couple of days to adjust and then go ahead pick her up and offer her a small pinkie. Do you know if your particular new snake has had a problem with reguraging? I would hope the store wouldn't sell those until they were feeding successful or only sell them to folks that know what they are doing :( Personally, I wouldn't knowingly buy a regurging snake, because I simply don't have the experience with them.

I wouldn't worry about feeding her pieces unless you know she's a regurge. Although others might suggest it, since you may not know if she's one of them. A hatchling really doesn't have that much problem getting down a small pinkie.

Also if you think she may be one who regurges, don't handle her after feeding fora minimum of 48 hours and your temps need to be just right. I would suggest that you order a thermostat right away. I discovered that it's the only way to really regulate temps in a tank.

You can normally tell when they get hungry. They will start prowling about their cages looking. Now my new one wouldn't do it until the lights went out in the room (almost immediately)... then it was the light on the tank went off. She's still not sure about people talking to her and will often run and hide, but she'll be back out on short order.

Some people don't disturb them if they are hidden, but I always have. I would feed in a separate container and then when the hatchling was done, just hold the container in the tank and they will just slide out and off they go.

I know thermostats are expensive.... but I would highly suggest one. Perhaps put it on the christmas list. :)

Thanks for the suggestions and helpful comments.

There's no evidence it's had regurges. When they said they had problems with a couple it was from the previous 'batch' I guess that they had on sale that were the ones I got my first snake from. And I'm at least 90% sure it was simply because they were handled too much after feeding. It's a pet store, they were on sale and sold out very quickly. After mine passed and I called they had none left, they ordered in just the one snake for me and after it came it in I don't believe it was handled because they said they hadn't yet fed in and therefore had to reason to touch it since it wasn't for sale for anyone. He didn't even handle it to send it on its way with me. He just gave me the mini plastic reptile container it was in which I'm now planning to clean and use for a feeder container. I think however I'll give the first couple meals in her home just to avoid the handling. The pinkies I got right now are really small so I probably will just try a whole one.

And I'll have to look into the thermostat. I'm a student so funds are limited but I do have a job for the xmas break so we'll see. How much are we lookin at here and what do they do? (Kinda newbish questions and I have an idea just not completely sure).

Thanks again,
Angela

There are several different ones, but I got the Herpstat ND because it actually regulates the temps and doesn't just turn it off and on like a proportional does (as I understand those). I paid $132 a piece for the two I got.

I bought a thermostat with a probe from Wal-Mart for $12...I put the probe under the aspen on the warm side (the "out" temperature) and the "in" temperature tells me what the ambient air temp is. I run the cord for the probe so that the thermostat is sitting above the cooler side, so I have a general idea as to both sides of the tank.

Then, to control the heat coming from the UTH, I followed the rheostat directions here and for about $6, I made my own rheostat, which I plug the UTH into and I control the amount of heat via a dimmer light switch. :) All found at my local (well, it's 20 mins away) Wal-Mart. :p

(It all sounds a lot more complicated than it really is...when all was said and done, I looked at the whole set-up and thought, "whoa, easy as pie..." And I have maintained excellent temps since, without having to worry about baking my snakies into pie... :grin01: )

Good luck!

Good news! :) It eats! After having a snake refuse food for 3 weeks until dying this is a big deal for me. I held the pinkie in front on the snakelet for a few second with twizzers from a disection kit (I dont use the kit anymore except for choppin up snake food) and snakie grabbed the pinkie. I hadn't seen this before since my previous one had just taken it off the bottom of the cage (before it went anorexic). It's been left alone since (fed yesterday) and I'll leave er alone til next feeding.
