A new enclosure and a new baby

We've had our little Cornelius for a bit and I've been thinking that he could use a little more room to spread out. We found a great deal for a 40 gallon on Craigslist. I debated a bigger tank because he stays in his hide 90% of the time. What a waste to give him a bigger enclosure if he isn't going to use it. We decided to do it anyway and I'm so glad we did. He acts like a different snake now. It has a bit of open space for him to stretch out as well as his climbing stick and plants. He is out every night now roaming, burrowing, climbing or just hanging out. I think we may get him some vines. He spends a fair amount of the time just laying in the open areas where before he had to wrap himself around the edges of his 20 gallon just to stretch out. He's in the last 2 pictures.
My son has a list of snakes that he wants a mile long. I've limited him to two snakes because even though he has a passion for them life takes twists and turns that a 10 year old can't even fathom. He can fill his home with snakes when he is grown :) After much research and debate we settled on a Jungle Carpet python. This little bugger is going to be a challenge but so far things have been going well. We found a lovely breeder who has been very helpful and she set us up with this little 6 month old boy. He's so tiny at 49 grams. We skipped the baby stage with our corn snake so the new guy seems itty bitty to us. The first picture of him is in the bag he came home in. He wasn't a very happy guy. The 2nd and 3rd are through the glass so they aren't great.

I'm so confused! I was thinking, Cornelius, cornsnake, oh wait, it's a carpet python, plot twist!! He's going to need the 40, at least, anyway!! But then there are pics of a big cornsnake, too.

Anyway, if you have carpet python problems, we have a resident expert, Heather of NW Exotics.

congratulations on the new addition! :)
he's a cutie! <3

and that does look like a much happier corn! ;)
I reasently switch my yearling over to a 40 gallon, and he's loving it too"

I think if you can afford the tank, and space.. bigger is always better.

I couldn't figure out how to switch the pictures around :)

To be honest I'm feeling like we may have bitten off a bit more than we should have with this carpet but we are hoping that the progress we make with him will be steady and measurable with consistent handling and care.
We need to let him settle a bit but he is so defensive when we are near his viv. I've been just sitting next to it so he gets used to our movements and size. He seems to be less freaked out as the days go by. The cool thing about the python is that he is out and about all the time. He's very interesting to watch.
We were spoiled with the corn. He's so mellow.

Cornelius's new home looks great. And congrats on the carpet! I love them sooo much. My second favorite snake with their bright yellow and black patterning.

I CAN'T WAIT !!!!! :crazy02:

We probably got a 1% chance that the weather will be good the way it's been going !

Two different snakes :) We moved the corn up to a bigger viv and that left an empty 20 gallon that my son had been itching to fill.

We are going to the show in Manchester. He could spend hours looking at everything while the husband and younger son eat the food they sell in the much cooler lobby :)

The breeder did say she hadn't handled them much. He tagged my son two times but he took it in stride. He has never been bitten by a snake before so that was new.

If your son isn't afraid of the carpet, after he's settled in, that will be a good project for him- taming him. I'm pretty sure it will just take time and patience. Just make sure he knows the snake isn't mean and he doesn't hate him- he is just very afraid.

I'm sure he'll tame up nicely for your son.

I wish we could get our herp-happy kids together-Alli just turned 9 and is snake-crazy, too.

I took pictures :)
You can see the other little bit off to the left. I wish I had put a ruler up to the bites. They were tiny.
My son doesn't know any other kids who love snakes like he does. I'm finding that parents who let their kids have snakes are few and far between.

I understand completely. It seems like every child who comes into my house thinks the snakes are cool and wants a snake, and every single parent doesn't even want to be in the same room with the snakes.

Parents. They're the worst!
