Hello!! So Samson is 3feet long and still in the ten gallon that came with him. I really want to upgrade him to my 29gal. In order to do so I need to purchase a new lid, new uth, and all of the thermostats and such that has been recommended. I have to buy things slowly since we are on a budget and it needs to fit into my budget.

Now I do not have a thermostat minus the suction cup one that came with the tank. I am confused on that and whatever the device is that hooks into the uth to control the temperature. What exactly is that device and how does it work? My uth doesn't have anything that can plug into it. It simply plugs into the wall. I know these two items are very important so I'd like to get them asap but a bit confused on what exactly I need and how they work.

I'm wondering however if it would be possible to get the lid for the 29gal as well as the thermostat and the other uth device I need and worry about a new uth in a month or so. Would that be a big deal? If I keep one hide over the heated spot he could use that. He mostly uses her paper towel tube anyways.

I hope my questions make sense.

Hello. What you are referring to that came with the tank I believe is a thermometer. While suction cup ones are not detrimental to a snake's health, it is better to have a digital one with a probe so you can measure the temperature on the bottom of the tank, where the snake's belly is. This is the important temperature.

A thermostat is a device that has a panel that looks like a wall socket, so you just use a regular UTH and plug into that. There are different ways to set it up but I'll explain how I do it. I put the probe of the thermostat between the bottom of my tank and UTH. I set that temperature to 103 degrees. If my mat is set at 103 degrees, then the glass bottom of my viv is 88 degrees and on top of the substrate is the perfect 85 degrees. It is important to always know the approximate temp under the substrate on the glass because it is possible for the snake to burrow down their and get burned.

The basic thermostat I use is the Hydrofarm (its 30 dollars on Amazon.com). It is cheap, loved by many other members, and works well. Basically the way it works is it has a temperature probe you put on the heatmat and you set it to temperature X. If the heatmat gets hotter than temperature X it turns the heatmat off. If the heatmat gets cooler than temperature X, it turns the heatmat on. This is how all basic thermostats work (the on/off method).

Let me know I didn't explain anything well and I can try to explain clearer.

Good luck with Samson!
