My male amel was put with my anery female the day after her first shed. He appeared very interested in her but I didn't have time to watch for copulation. He was with her for 2 and a half days and this was on 2/22-2/25. I then place him with my amel female (she shed on 2/24) for a few days (2/25-2/26 and he was interested in her. I did notice residual sperm in the aspen. On 2/28 I introduced the male to the anery female again for 3 days and noticed residual sperm in the apsen and removed him. I placed him with the amel female on 3/3 for two days and noticed residual sperm.
On 3/6 the anery stopped eating and shed on 3/20 (A hide box was placed in cage on 3/18). She has stayed in the box but comes out when I check on her (not all the way). I was worried her hide box was to small so I readied a bigger one and changed them today. She has been in and out of her newer bigger hide box all day. Tonight I offered her a mouse which she took very quickly and seemed to want more but I did not feed her anymore. Since then she has gone back into her hide box. At this point I don't know if she is gravid or not although I thought she was. This is my first year breeding so while looking at her underbelly scales to see where they are they appear to round slightly up on the sides but I don't know if I'm just imagining that to be optimistic.
Now the amel female has continued to eat every week and has yet to shed. Is it possible that she is gravid? Am I just getting impatient and am I still within the time lines? Should I introduce the male again? I have read Bill and Cathy Love's book but I learned long ago that nothing goes like clock work when I'm involved.
Thanks

One of the first things that jumps out at me is putting the male with so many different females so quickly. One thing that I remember reading in Kathy's book is that it takes approx. 3 days for the male to 'recharge' his sperm count. I'd wonder if maybe the eggs weren't fertilized first. Second thing that jumps out is that the snakes don't read the books!

I had a couple females last year lay eggs that didn't look like they were gravid and ate right up to laying while others stopped eating while in blue for their prelay shed. I had some females that also double clutched by holding back sperm, unannounced to me of course, and ate through the whole process and I magically found eggs one day with no egg laying box or preparation, etc.

There are a lot of variables that can be involved here, but I personally don't think you need to be in worry mode yet. I had one female last year as well that didn't lay her eggs for 71 days past breeding, talk about worried!

Read the CSM again, relax, keep records of everything to look back on, and accept the variability within the numbers.

PS. I took to housing the males overnight or for a couple of days with the females this season when necessary, but also changed out their aspen to newspaper. When I found evidence, he went back to his cage for a 3 day 'recharge' before being placed with another female. I don't have any eggs on the ground yet, but the 3 day thing worked pretty good for me last season.

Thank you for the advice. I had read the 3 day but they had also said for older more mature males it is less time. My male is 8 years old. That is why I placed him in sooner. I will just wait and see what happens and hopefully everything will work out. I'll keep it posted.
Thanks again
Mark
