Aftercare for Mom

greymaiden

Love and Hisses
I purchased a breeding pair of candy canes this season and was told at the time that mom might be gravid already. Indeed, she was!

She laid 7 eggs last week. I think the number is so small because this is her second clutch of the season. I need to call the breeder who sold her to me and double-check on that. Either way, the eggs seem healthy and I'm hoping I can get at least 5 hatchlings from the 7.

Anyway, perhaps I am anthropomorphizing, but after I took her eggs away to put in the egg box she looked very depressed, not to mention frightfully skinny. She ate only one fuzzy two days after laying and is currently getting ready to shed.

Is there anything else I can do to help her recover? I've been leaving her alone and just making sure she has fresh water and a clean bin.

She looks so sad and skinny. I wish there was something I could do for her :(

What makes snakes happy? If I had to give her a present, what would it be?

Thanks for any advice you can give,
Jamie Lynn

Hi,

I know how you feel - I felt all protective of my female after she laid on May 29th! It took her quite a while to recover - she is ok now but still a little more nervous than before she became gravid (she's only two and it was her first clutch). She wouldn't come out of her lay box until just before she shed, but after she shed she was pretty much normal again. It is worrying but I think you are doing the right thing. I would feed her two or three pinkies every three days to build her up for a little while. Mine is back onto larger food now, but still very thin. She's getting stronger every day though.

Just give her time and space to recover - she will do, remember she's just given birth!

Good luck!

Jessica :)
