Age of a snake???

Is there any way at all to get a rough estimate on how old a snake is? Can the length of the snake give a ball park figure? We thought our snakes were fairly young (about 2 1/2 months) but someone in our local reptile store mentioned that they were about 9 months old. Thanks

Most snakes are not born in the middle of winter. 9 months old would be correct assuming that they were born in the summer of 2004.

Why would you think your snakes were only 2.5 months?

I'd bet on the 9 month figure.

I too am wondering how old my albino is. Its about 16-18 inches long. I know my ghost is just a hatchling because of its length which is just about 7 or even less than my albino.

Defx, why do you think your ghost is 2-3 months old?

I dont think you guys understand that VERY few people breed in the middle of winter. Most people begin brumating in late fall (Oct/Nov) and pull their snakes out in the Spring (Fed/March) and most people are starting to get eggs now, and most are starting to hatch within the next few weeks. Don just had eggs hatch, Rich just had a clutch layed last week. I think Connie and Chuck are the only ones who have had babies hatching for a while now.

I'd highly doubt that anyones snake is 2-3 months old unless you were told so by whomever you bought it from. If they didn't tell you, I'd assume it was born in 2004 (June-Sept) and go with that.

My snake came from the petstore 2-3 months ago, and is about 12-13" long. I have no idea how old they are when sold at a petstore, or any idea on how to judge age. How old would you think this one is?

Petstores can be difficult because they don't always feed regularly so the snake might be undersized to begin with. They sometimes get them quite small. My local petshop had ones that were probably 10-12" long. I can't imagine that they had many feedings before they were sold.

Size seems to depend largely on how much and how often the snake has been eating. A snake that is not eating, eats very little, or eats infrequently can be alot smaller compared to a snake that is fed properly and is an excellent feeder.
