hi,

I have a Carolina Corn and I am really interested in breeding her,

1) how old and how big must she be before she can breed successfully

and

2) how old and big must the male be before he can breed with her.

What is the average clutch size for a first time breeder and how many slugs/ fertile eggs can I expect.

hello

Females need a good size...preferably over 35 inches. They *can* bred smaller but the risks go up. I just saw on another forum a female bred at 24 inches died of impaction with photos showing the after surgery to try and remove the eggs. All of which did not make it. So to be safe wait until she is 35 or over IMHO.

Males can be a bit smaller! I can't say how small but generally they don't have to be a certain size, of course a hatchling won't work *LOL* :)

P.S. If you have a good male and both snakes were brumated your first clutch could be 100% fertile but then again it might be 100% INfertile. You just can't say without taking all the factors into consideration, including factors you may not know about (sterile male or god knows what)

No it's not absolutely necessary, but a lot of people do it to increase the chances of successful breeding. Some people also do it to take a short break from snake caring, others because they want to simulate "natural" conditions or whatever. I know a pair of corns that breed every spring like clockwork and they are not and have never been brumated.
