I recently got my corn, and today was the first day I handled her (i think its a her, but haven't been able to get a 100% answer until I get to my reptile vet). I decided to handle her around 8:00-9:00 pm since she would be active around that time. I lifted up her hide, and automatically she went into defensive mode which I expected. When I tried to scoop her up she shocked me with her rattling tail and then a quick snap at my finger (it didn't hurt just shocked me). I decided maybe I should let her come to me. So instead of trying to scoop her up, I put my hand in the cage moved in the directions she would head towards. It took a few mins but soon she got really close to my hand a started flickering her tongue alot. I guess she accepted the smell cause she slowly went on to my hand. After I got her out of the cage it was nothing, she loved crawling all over my hands and in between my fingers. She even tried to crawl her way up my arm. My questions are should I continue using my technique by letting her come to me? Will she soon adapt to me and allow me scoop her up because she knows my smell? And how long should I be handling her, I heard long handling can stress them (I don't know how she seemed so interested in everything when on my hand).

Any replies would be helpful! Thanks!

well yah she snapped at you, you're a hungry giant and shes a quick snack(in her little mind anyway). if letting her come to you makes you more at ease with handling, then by all means do so. just don't expect her to always do so. short handling intervals are best after a week or so to allow your new pet time to acclimate to her new surroundings. um, how old is she? good luck.

Many times if you lift her hide, you may get a defensive response. Like you said, her strike didn't hurt, it is just shocking. You can try the method you used and wait for her to get curious and come to your hand. Or, you can go ahead and pick her up. Chances are once you have her in your hand, she will do the same as she did tonight. At some point she will recognize you scent, but it may not change the way she reacts when you reach in her cage.

As far as the amount of time to handle, it varies snake to snake. Some snakes stress easily and shouldn't be handled long. While some do not seem to be effected by being handle for long amounts of time or being handled often. Use your judgement. Just don't handle for a couple days after feeding.

I'm not sure about her age, she's only 12in. if that. I don't want her to always be defensive when I put my hand in the cage. I know letting her come to me is fine, but it would be nice to actually pick her up instead of letting her come to me all the time. I guess this will all take time, which is fine. Im just goin keep trying and soon she'll come around.

Ill be posting pics of her very soon :D
