Almost a Cornsnake owner.

After seeing a local reptile expert at my youngest son's school, I took the family to see his museum a couple of Sundays ago. It was an experience I won't forget. The best part of it was being allowed to handle some of the snakes as much as we wanted. They had a couple of corns, a Rosy Boa, a Ball Python, and a large Burmese Python that were all available for handling. The kids were enthralled. So was I. There came a moment with each of the snakes (well at least the smaller snakes), when it would relax in my hand or around my arms; and I found myself smiling and stroking the snakes. So I'm going to "get the kids" a cornsnake. I expect this snake to get a lot of handling.

I'm still researching everything I'm going to need. I'm going to get the habitat all set up before I get the snake. Finding a local store that has the supplies for me to browse is my biggest problem so far.

I pitched the idea of getting the snake as a Christmas present to the kids, but I may not be able to wake that long. I will probably have lots of questions, and I'm looking forward to haning out here.

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you are another corn addict waiting to happen :). You came to the right place. The search feature will help you to find information on just about anything. If you don't find it there is always someone willing to help.
You should be able to find everything you need to get a basic setup pretty easily. If you check under housing there are a lot of different pics and suggestions to get you started.

There is a show coming up in Puyallup the 22nd and 23rd of this month, if you are looking for supplies and corn snakes, this is the place to look!
A link to the NWCB Expo in Puyallup Wa

P.S.
The Bean farm promotes the show, they also have everything you need. The link takes you to thier web site.

Hey Keith!!
Do I remember the moment I decided I wanted a snake?? Oh yeah. After years of being phobic for snakes I started to read more about them on a forum I visited to get information about my lizards. People on that forum kept snakes, some of them kept venomous ones but I'll never want any of them in my house. But a lot of them had cornsnakes, hognoses, boa's, pythons, milksnakes, African Houssesnakes etc.
So I started asking millions of questions!
Then I had to go to the reptilestore again to buy crickets for my lizards. I knew they had a lot of snakes in the shop but I never went farther into the shop then the counter!
On that particular day I asked Roger, the owner if I could handle one of his cornsnakes. Of course! Within 20 seconds, so second thoughts weren't even possible, I had a mature cornsnake sliding through my hands and over my arms and.......I was thrilled, I fell in love.
After years of screaming when seeing a documentary on t.v. about snakes and getting very nervous about reading about snakes, I stood there and held one myself.
Within a month I had my own baby-cornsnake and I am still so happy about that.
Hope you will experience all the fun I have with my snakes!
With Regards,
Liz

Welcome to the forums! It was just a year ago that I had "just one"; now I'm continually in a state of "just one more".

From one geek to another :crazy02: - enjoy the addiction, and you'll find a lot of great information and people here.

jazz

Thanks everybody!

I want to thank everybody for making me feel so welcome. I've got a good feeling about this place.

The reptile museum I mentioned told me about the Puyallup Show. I have to work Saturday day, and work Sunday night. I might be able to go Sunday day, but I doubt it. :cry: .

Before my visit to the museum, I wasn't afraid of snakes, I had just never seriously considered them as pets before. It was an eye opening experience.

Now I have a quick question: what do the numbers mean in some people's signatures? For instance:

"TRACI
1.0.6 amel 1.1.4 snows 0.0.2 butters 0.1 checkered garter(KC) 0.1 hybrid(Salmissra)
misc. dogs,cats,birds,etc"

It's obvious that those numbers are telling me something about Traci's snakes and other pets, I just don't know what.

Again, I want to thank everybody for making me feel so welcome.

X.Y.Z where

X = males
Y = females
Z = unknown gender

Looking at my signature as an example, I don't know if my Pac-Man Frog is a he or a she.....J.D. is a male, Glutton a female, etc.

regards,
jazz

I'm new here, too. Just be warned: Corn snakes are very addictive. I went to a show planning to get just one snake, and came home with three and a 'wish list!'

There's a lot of great info on this site, and a lot of very knowledgeable and friendly people. I look forward to seeing what you get.

Welcome

I can third the addiction factor. I got my first corn in early august, I know have 27, and I'm working on more. I want to buy at least one more every weekend...I actually get upset if I can't find a good one to buy that weekend....

Welcome to the forum. Your going to enjoy it!!

Camerageek, welcome and I hope you get a corn sooner than Xmas! That show sounds like a good place to look...

Hey KGLVR did you enter your avatar in the valentine pictures contest? It's cute how the snake is coiled into a heart shape!

LOL...Me too!

I agree with everyone else...this is an ADDICTIVE hobby! I got my first snake in February 2002. I now have 172 of them (a few of them are sold or are still for sale, however). I probably have around 150 "keepers."
