Alternating Food Sources

solo1979

Lovin' me some snakes!
Was having a discussion last night about snake poop (fun right?) and it got me thinking a bit about food sources. I've been pleased with the feeders I've purchased at the local show but was curious, for those of you that don't breed your own feeders, do you rotate suppliers? I mean, when you think about it, if using only one supplier you are putting a lot of faith in that company/person that they are feeding their mice/rats a high quality diet. We don't eat chicken or beef from the same place all the time so would it be any different for our corns?

That's an interesting question. I don't know. I got my first mouse order from Layne Labs. I did some research and, if their website can be believed, they treat their mice humanely, kill them humanely and feed them nutritious food. The mice were clean and big and perfect. Next, I got mice from Mice Direct at a local pet show. The mice are much smaller, they are not as clean and they stink to high heavens. I plan on switching back to Layne Labs and staying there. If they do feed and treat the mice humanely, I don't need to look anywhere else. I don't know if their website can be believed, but the mice sure looked good.

That's good to know. The fuzzies that I'm currently using have a bit of a smell. It's not overpowering, but graduating up from pinkies to fuzzies there's a noticeable difference, as I couldn't smell the pinkies at all. One of my dogs and cats have noticed it too and their noses go crazy when I'm throwing the mice in the bins for feeding time. I kind of just assumed that mice have an odor.

well we started with ones from petco they were a good size never stank, but pricey.
we now have a CRAP ton lol of pinks, hoppers, and adults mice from rodent pro.. they were a really good price and they seem to look a little healthier then the ones at petco maybe more plump..

I personally think they all stink when thawing though i have a great sniffer so feeding them makes me want to barf =[ but the petco ones were a little stronger smelling then the new ones from rodent pro..

just my .02$

Yeah I figured it was just a normal mouse smell. They don't look unhealthy or anything.

I'll probably consider ordering online here and there to rotate sources once the gang is up to adult feeders. It's hard to stock up right now because these kids are growing like weeds and buying fuzzies or even hoppers in bulk might be overkill.

well you can always feed a hopper and a fuzzie =]
but if theres ever a reptile show around ya i would go check it out cause you can get good prices there normally, also if you order a week before on rodentpro.com you will get the oline price cause at the show it will be a few dollars more not to bad really we got 100 pinks, 100 hoppers and 25 adults for 79$ but we will have to go again soon cause i keep gettin new snakes.. ugh lol didnt think about the food tell i brought them home last night!

Lol! Yeah I keep adding snakes too but everyone is around the same age so I only have 2 sizes of feeders in my freezer. I currently buy from my local show but may rotate with online suppliers in the future. We'll see.

The ones from Layne Labs didn't really smell. So I'm assuming that they rinse them off or something before packaging. I guess its the final "death pee" that makes the mice smell. My husband noticed the difference and commented on it. I have a good nose, so I already knew they smelled, but he smelled it across the room.

It's funny you should mention pee. While picking up my rootbeer ghost from FedEx, the inquisitive girl behind the counter asked what it was and how to care for them. She then sort of whispered, "Don't take this the wrong way but don't snakes smell like pee?" I had never heard such a question. Maybe she was referring to their dinner.
