Aluminium reflector lamp

Hi all,

I am new in the world of reptiles and I'm about to get my first Corn snake.
Right now I am still working on the vivarium.
So I am putting a lot of time reading all your posts to know as much I can about giving the snake the best.
I come up with a post on this link http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8552&highlight=bask
They are talking about a aluminium reflector lamp.
Now can anyone tell me or have a picture of that aluminium reflector lamp cause I dont know what that is.
O and if anybody have any suggestions about heating up the best way without ust of a UTH, that would be apreciated.

Thanks for your reply.

All they are talking about is like a heat lamp you would see at a buffet table. You can go to a home improvement center and get one cheaper than a pet store but remember you do not the cheapest one. At the home center they will be by the paint stuff. I do not use one for my snakes but I do use one for the tortises in the winter. Hope this helps.

I find that heat lamps dry my viv too much. I only use it to raise the viv temps if they are extremely low in the winter, or if a snake has a respiratory infection. I never use it otherwise, and when I did (except for R.I) I turned it off at night. I rely on an under tank heater to provide belly heat, and they seem to do fine with it.

if you do use the heat lamp you could by a timer so it will automaticaly turn on and off at the same time every day, also if you notice it is getting a little dry you can mist the cage with water my snakes seem to love it:)

You could also get a ceramic heat emitter (40 watt) instead. It looks similar to a light bulb except it emits no light, only heat. That way you can use the heater day or night and not worry about having a light on 24/7 such that the corn has no night/day cycles, especially during the winter when you need the extra heat. CHE's can be found online or in a local petshop that carries reptile supplies. To give you an idea on price, mine 40 watt CHE was $30-40 from a petshop. Online places are usually cheaper but you have to factor in shipping. Oh, and CHE's use the same bowl-shaped housing as any other heat lamp.

I use aluminum dome lamps on two of my three snakes, and both of those snakes shed perfectly, so (for me at least) the humidity issue is not a problem. I got my heat lamps at Home Depot for about $5 each (I think). They are basically just a socket for the lightbulb, attached to a big clip for hanging the lamp (I discard the clip and just let the lamp rest on the heat-resistant screen tops on the vivs), and a large hemispherical aluminum dome surounding the area where the bulb would be. I use a 60 watt bulb, and that keeps my temps perfect. I really think these are the way to go. Good luck finding everything you need for your viv!
