Always a Blue Phase?

CreepyCrawlrGrl

Converted Snake Lover
Now, logically, I would think that the blue phase is absolutely necessary to shedding. However, Icepick is displaying some obvious shed-like behavior (rubbing her face against things, mostly), and we're fairly sure she never hit her blue phase. Also, how long can the period between the blue phase and the actual shed last? We've been paying really close attention to her for the past month, but we were out of town last month, so is it possible that she just went through, like, a really long pre-shed period? It doesn't seem like it would make sense, but I dunno.. her behavior is very shed-like. Dunno what to make of this. Any ideas?

When my guys (and gals) have the blue phase usually within a few days they shed. I have difficulty with my Blizzard corn I just can't tell when the "blue" phase is happening, the same with my GTP- so I look for the "other" signs such as you decribe. With my other snakes it's quite obvious, one of them looks dead when he starts his shedding process (kinda scary) :eek1:
You could try increasing the humidity, moss box, paper towel box, these things might help the shed go smoothly :)

Well, I've never seen her shed before, but my boyfriend has, and says that the phase is just about impossible to miss- her eyes turn a very light "ice" blue (they're usually black) and her whole body goes very cloudy. Her underbelly seems a bit dull now, but not cloudy like it usually does, and her eyes haven't gone blue. The humidity in the place is pretty good, and our snakes usually shed without trouble, so we're not really worried about that. Just a little strange that she's exhibiting this behavior without having hit a blue phase (that we can tell.)

Well Good Luck :) Keep us posted on what happens!

Sometimes my guys have the "blue" eyes but right before they shed their eyes return to their normal color- this occurs pretty quickly (a day or so)....?

Well, I tell ya, we just found our bp in his blue phase, so I just got kind-of an idea of what it should look like. His eyes don't go as blue as Icepick's apparently do, but his are a little hard to identify as "blue," as that they're very dark. Perhaps Icepick's eyes just went a darker blue than normal this time around- I did notice that her underbelly looks more cloudy than usual. Normally, she has a very clear black-and-white checked pattern, and it's a little less sharp-looking today. She took food today, so we'll be letting her be for awhile anyway. I'll let you know when and if she sheds. Thanks!

Oh, I've totally forgotten! Yes, little Icepick shed. I've been out of town for the past month, but my boyfriend told me that about a week after I left, ALL the snakies went into shed. I think they planned it that way just to piss me off. He says that Nippy was shedding right in front of him, that he was just sitting and watching and she didn't seem to mind one bit. Well, that just figures! lol. I'll be watching them very closely from now on- next time they shed, I'll be there, watching.

Sometimes you miss it totally

My little 3 month old snow is such a sneaky shedder that about 4 days ago I fed her and then put her back in the terrarium....20 mins later, she shed. I had absolutely no idea she was in shed! Her big brother (same parents, one year older) does the same, but now that his apricot tones have developed, he can't hide it from me as much. Keep a note of when each of your snakes shed and you'll start to see a pattern. My youngsters shed every 3½-5 weeks (it's an individual thing) and the big ones go 5-7 weeks between sheds. That way I can have a 'heads up' for when they're next due.
