So much for "no babies this year"

What are you going to do with it once it's old enough to leave its momma? Also, I can't tell, is it a filly or a colt?

Well, after the whole "horse-sale" debacle, and then realizing that I just CANNOT not have horses... Oh, it's a long story...

So, most people know of my love for horses. My entire family has been deep in Arabians for as long as I could remember. I had my stallion, and a few mares, the progeny of them, etc etc. (Do a search in the chit-chat section for back stories)

Well, last year was... rough. I was unemployed for the better part of 6 months, lost my house, and just couldn't care for them anymore. Subsequently, most of my family had financial issues as well. My parents got a divorce, sold the ranch in Scottsdale and all but our favorite horses (who were moved to my uncles for boarding). So, I having no house and mom needing a roommate prompted us to get a house together. However, with no income on my end, we couldn't get horse property.

An old trainer friend (Jim Lowe) of my uncle approached us about buying ALL of our horses. It was gut-wrenching, but there was nothing we could do about it. We lost everything we had been working towards. Thankfully, Jim is a very prominent breeder of arabians. I still keep in touch with him.

So, fast forward to last year... Got back in touch with a good friend, Jamilyn, that I had lost contact with. She invited me out riding (she has 2 old schooling horses), and that was all it took. While at the auction to look for misc cheap tack, we came across this mare in the auction ring. We fought those killers hard for her, and pooled up everything we could. So $225 later, this beautiful mare became ours. We named her Booty because of her gigantic quarter horse butt. She turned out to be a VERY well bred ranch raised quarter horse mare, but we couldn't get near her. She had been raised on the open range since birth, and human contact was limited. We worked with her for months, and she developed a strong bond with Jamilyn. It was a matter of time before I was able to find part-time work (not in nursing), and shortly thereafter found the new love of my life, Ruger (a young arabian gelding who I am currently training).

Around August, we decided that Booty started to get a little bit of a belly. Ruger's hay belly was gaining girth as well, and we figured that they were just a little too well fed (we spoil them). So we put them on a diet. Ruger lost a bit of weight. Booty, who was progressing well under saddle at this point, wasn't. Good lord, you fat little mare! Quit being so lazy! So, we upped her exercise program. Nothing. She got fatter.

"Jamilyn, this mare is the easiest keeper I have ever seen."

In October, we felt her belly MOVE.

"Oh god... Jamilyn, put your hand on her flank."

*bump bump*

A frantic call to our vet and one palpation later, Booty was confirmed in foal. How in the WORLD did this happen?!

Of course! She was raised in a remuda on the ranch. Any one of those colts had free run of her before she was brought in for sale. As a matter of fact, she was run through the auction with a stallion, and 2 other mares.

So, after trying our best to provide make-up prenatal care, she delivered a beautiful filly on Feb 7th. We aptly named her October Rust (since she was discovered in October, and her color screams "rusty nail"). But we call her Bitty Booty, or BB for short. She's a handful, but perfectly healthy and happy.

Mom is currently loosing the belly :p

She is a filly, and we are just going to keep her. I've been training horses for around 15 years. Her mama was a breeze to train once she learned to trust humans, so I suspect this little girl will be just as easy.

Booty has since become Jamilyn's main horse (or rather, Jamilyn has become Booty's main human). But we are partners in crime. Between my know how, and her determination, these girls will become great mounts.

And in late January, about a week before she foaled.

Mama and baby are GORGEOUS horses! I can't believe you got Booty for $225 at a horse auction. She's amazing. Why was she even there to start with, I wonder?

Congratulations on your pretty little filly. You have been through so much heartbreak. I'm so glad you have these two horses to help fill the void left by the loss of your Arabians. What next for you and the horses, I wonder? All good things, I hope :).

I was going to say the same thing. I'm no judge of horse flesh, but she's awfully pretty for a $225 animal.

It took me a minute or two to realize what you were trying to say with the title. I was thinking you bought the foal and that maybe it ended up being a hybrid or something. :roflmao:

Well, little BB still has a while to go until we really do much with her. For now, she gets to just grow up and learn how to be a horse. We won't do much more than halter training and roundpen work for about 3 years. Mama is going to finish her training with Jamilyn, and myself whenever she needs help. We're hoping that her cutting blood will shine through, because we have a lovely herd of cows at our disposal :D

I'm going to focus on my goofball, Ruger. He is a damned handful! He is the kind of horse that is going to take A LOT of attention, so I'm going to focus on him. One thing Arabians are known for... they are slow to mature. Booty is only 5, but she settled down pretty quick, especially after having this filly. Ruger, at 7, is like a darned toddler. But he's smart and talented... I just need to find a way to harness it. I miss the stew out of my horses, but I know they are in a good place, and I will always be able to see them.

Isn't it weird dealing with quarter horses after being raised with Arabs, though??

VERY VERY much so. But I am the epitome of a 5 year old horse-crazy girl trapped in an adult body. If it's a horse, I love it :p Jamilyn's family raised Quarter Horses for quite a few generations, just like my family did with Arabians. We actually met around 12 years ago at local shows. She's shown me how good Quarter Horses can be, and I've done the same for her with Arabs. I took her to Scottsdale this year, and she had a blast!

And I made sure to talk to Jim regarding being able to retain breedings to Smokey. So... with Booty's elaborate pedigree (old foundation-bred cutting/reining), and with Smokey's fantastic crabbet/tersk influence, she convinced me to combine the best of both worlds, and have something we can agree about lol. They'd be one heck of a performance cross!

Congrats on your new horses!

They are gorgeous!

I used to have a few back when I was in my 20s. A couple of half Arabs and a pinto. I do miss them. As you may know, we are hoping to relocate in the far east side of Mesa, or AJ. I am hoping we can get about an acre or so. I don't think I want the time or financial commitment to a horse, but if we get the right place, we might let somebody board one there, if they do the work. Then we could have the enjoyment of a horse around without the commitment. Best of both worlds, lol! They are such beautiful animals!

What part of Mesa are you in? Is there a total lack of nursing jobs out there? I let my LPN license expire years ago. But I thought I might look into some sort of part time private duty where they need experience, but not a license. I don't plan to breed herps full time any more, so will be looking at doing some various types of part time, small business, or free lance work.

Hope to meet you out there!

Good luck with your new beauties!

Kathy, it sounds like you and I would be neighbors if you relocated. I live right in the AJ/Mesa border, and the horses are not far away. You'll just have to come out and ride with me some day.

Nursing jobs are out there, especially for experienced nurses. LPNs with as many years backing them up as you have are pretty much running all of the non-acute facilities here. I'm actually working at a SNF right now, which is awesome (though very different from the hospital). There are quite a few LPNs working with me.

WOW - he is GORGEOUS!

My brother lives in Meridian Hills just off Meridian, and we plan to be within a few miles of him, between the 202 in the west and the desert in the east. We looked at about 2 or 3 dozen places in that area when we were out there a couple of weeks ago.

I don't anticipate getting my license back. It has been WAY too long since I worked as an LPN. I am figuring more of private, home duty jobs where they might appreciate some experience, but don't need a licensed nurse. I worked for a couple of years in a nursing home (as well as a couple of years in a small hospital in peds and general med/surg), but the ol' knees won't hold up to running up and down the halls all night like I did back in the '80s when I had that job, haha!

I already have a few friends in the Phoenix area (plus my brother), and Bill has even more field herping friends out there. But it will be REALLY cool to have a local CS friend or two, as well. Do you belong to the local herp society? We are quite involved in ours, and look forward to getting involved out there, too.

That's pretty funny! I live on Meridian, literally 2 blocks away from P&M Arena. He's my neighbor!

You know, I did see a lot of ads for in-home care while looking for this job. People are trying to stay away from nursing homes, so I can only imagine the market for home care is pretty nice.

I am a member of the Phoenix Herp Society, but I will admit that I don't always have time to support the way I'd like to. I do stay in touch, and try to make meetings here and there. They are a great group of people though, and I know everyone would be ecstatic to have you and Bill join us when you head this way. :)

COOL!

One of the areas we like the most is what I call the "Meridian Foothills" (my own name, haha!) in that isolated section north of Brown and east of Meridian. They are almost all 1.25 acre or so pieces there. Very pretty up there, and reasonably priced, probably because there are so many mobiles there. In fact, we put in an offer on a place on Warner up there - I really fell in love with it. It was a foreclosure, and they got multiple offers above the asking price, so we didn't get it. But there are still more coming on the market.
