Amature clay snake hides.

Arpolis

Corn Snake Breeder
Hello all!

It has been a while since I have been posting but I am getting some new goodies from SMR and since I am re-arranging/upgrading snake tanks, I decided to make some snake hides for the bigger tank. To go with these I will have a new home made clay water bowl as well. Hope you enjoy the pics!

Those are pretty good :) what kinda clay do you use? btw has anyone found a safe paint that could be used on them?

I use "Polymer clay" Which is the generic version of Sculpy II. It is non-toxic. Cooks in a normal oven at 275 - 280 for 15 - 30 min depending on thickness and is water tight. No need to pait them if using is for bowels. I havew had some water bowles out of this stuff for over a year now with 0 leeks.

Michals hobby store. On the package it says it is distributed by Michals so that may be the sole distributor.

I went to the one of the craft places here and all they had was Sculpey and it was like 16 bucks for a small brick of it! I just got the air dry clay a 10lb. box for 10 bucks. We'll see how it works, better start generating some ideas for what I want to make hu?

I am sure you can yous that air dry stuff but I use the sculpt type stuff because it is less clay and more like a plastic or "polymer". I make both hides and water bowels. Original clay is cheapper but affectively a carbon compound that is poreus and eventually absorbs water. If you are using it for hides it should be great & waaaaaaay cheaper than stuff bought at patsmart or petco.

Wow! Those are so cool! I'm taking a college clay class and I've been making hides/water dishes for my snakes, too. There's so many lovely, natural, safe glazes and it's a LOT cheaper than buying that expensive stuff at the pet store. A large hide sculpture that might cost $20 costs my $1 and a bit of time to construct . . . but it's fun.

I'm not sure about paint for air dry type clay, but if you're using natural clay fired in a kiln, then glazed it's my understanding the glazes are food safe, with some exceptions which should be clearly labeled . . .

Very nice! I'm working on making some clay hides and furnature for my critters as well. Its fun.

I found some cheap non toxic acrylic paints at my local Micheals, and as long as you seal it I dont think it should be a problem. Its called craft smart.

Yeah I just plan on making hides with mine, I have dog/cat food dishes for water bowls. I plan to put some sort of glaze on them.
