Amenlanistic or Albino?

Rayinpa37

Unwilling husband...
Can someone clarify for me whether this is an Albino or an Amelanistic?

Which ever you like both terms are correct. Amel is probably more commonly used.

It's amelanistic. It lacks melanin. Albinos lack all pigment. Most mammals' pigmentation is SOLELY due to melanin, so an amelanistic mammal is typically albino as well. This isn't the case with snakes, which may express other pigment.

I must spread rep around before I can give it to you, apparently. Good summation though!

Going off what Roy said. People generally consider ALL white animals with red eyes to be albinos. If a human is unable to produce melanin (our only color pigment) they are albino. However, corns have 3 different color pigments (red, yellow, and black) these color pigments combine and make up all the different morphs. If one or more of these color pigments are absent the corn is considered an albino. The snake you have is an Amelanistic (Amel) corn snake a.k.a Red Albino meaning it lacks (black) melanin pigmentation. Cute little one I might add :D My Anerythristic (Anery) corn snake (below) is a.k.a Black Albino because she lacks red pigmentation. Hope that helped clear things up :D

I read about that in the Bible. That was the time when all the lights went out for 3 days and 3 nights. Shocking.

Thanks, all! There is a cute pic of him in his fake plant thing (and his neighbor, our Lavender) in our New Member Intro post! =]
