Animal crush video, Anybody hear about this..animal crush

Is this the one where the Chinese lady crushes the kitten in high heels? If so, it is gruesome and sick but it's also at least a few years old and I think China was so outraged by the video that they basically hunted the woman down to arrest her.

Lexie, it's the same subject, yes, but I don't know if it's the same video or not, and don't want to know.

Neither do I. I've never actually watched that particular video myself, but I've seen thumbnails of stills from it and been "jokingly" linked to progression pictures of it through tinyurl. I have absolutely no desire to see anything like that. Animal cruelty literally makes me sick to my stomach like nothing else.

Crush videos are have actually been around for a while. IIRC, "faces of death" was a compilation that came out several years back.

I personally have never watched one and never want to. Sickening IMO.

OMG, I can't handle these videos. I did see the "kitten crush" video in its entirely a few years ago, because I got it in an e-mail and thought it was a joke - I thought something funny was going to happen. I've never been able to get the image out of my head.

Faces of Death was humans though, right? All I remember from it is a guy being attacked by a gator... ugh...

I'm sorry that happened to you. I was similarly introduced to a video of one of the Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs' victims... That is the first time something on the internet has ever made me cry.

The Supreme Court ruled the trafficking legal since the videos are separate entities from the crime, which is already accounted for.
Dave's article was dated April 20, 2010. Being on the Supreme Court must be hard work and very demanding. I _suppose_ there was precedent for their ruling.

Note,...I did not know there was a 'market' for such fashizzle.
I'll have to check the new DSM-V for new paraphilias.

So should child porn videos be legal since that's separate from the crime? I'm a pretty big proponent of free speech, but this just seems crazy.

You make a good point. Normally I would say that there is a world of difference between child pornography and... well, name basically any fetish... simply because of the matter of consent, but animals can't consent either. And speaking of animals, what about bestiality? Proponents of these things often argue that it's only the makers of the video who have created a victim, not the buyers/downloaders of it, but those people are often acting in their own interest as well as refusing to acknowledge the possibility that, if there were not an audience for these things, these people might not do it or at least not regularly. It's a very tricky subject; obviously there are things like this video, videos of people being actually killed, child pornography, bestiality etc... which are obviously, to anyone outside their intended market, WRONG WRONG WRONG. But, as with any debate over the first amendment, once you start making one thing illegal, who decides where and with what it ends? My fear is, the second we make it ok to ban any visual or text based content online, regardless of how abhorrent, then it won't be long before the people up top begin abusing that privilege and we end up like China and N Korea in our virtual access.

I have read descriptions of these videos...

and I have NO desire to actually see one. Even images from movies showing animal or child torture have stayed in my mind WAY too long - and they are just movies! I sure don't want to see the real thing!

As for what should be illegal to possess, and how to decide - I think it should be based on whether or not some non-consenting adult (or minor or animal) was actually harmed, regardless of whether it offends the sensibilities of some particular person or another, or even many people.

For example, I find boxing to be repugnant. BUT - the participants are consenting adults, so I would never try to argue against it. But if the fighters are animals, children, or adults forced to participate, that would be a totally different story. In the same vein, I think most would agree that child porn and animal torture constitute harm to a non-consenting participant, but bestiality, while repugnant, probably does no harm to an animal (unless they are physically assaulted, I guess. I have to admit to no experience in exactly what those videos would encompass). So, while all of those possibilities may be almost equally offensive to most people, I could see a logical reason to make the former illegal and the latter legal (although I would not allow minors to purchase everything allowed for adults).

This brings up (tangentially) another problem with banning anything on the internet... if someone really, really wants to, they can find whatever they want. Even if the internet in their local connection might have blocks, they can switch to a proxy and be off scot-free. If you ban the viewing of something online, how do you enforce it when someone can just change their proxy to someone in Brazil's and be browsing freely again?

EXACTLY!

China has been trying to enforce their brand of censorship for a long time. But the Internet is making it really difficult for them these days. As quickly as the government finds ways to shut things down, people will find a new way to get around their control. It will even be more difficult for the government to censor in the West than it is in more repressive countries.
