Anyone else keep Dumerils Boas?

Hello! Some quick questions but first some background.

This last Thursday was my birthday and my husband knows me well enough to know I would want a reptile so he said he would be fine with me picking out a new herp for my birthday. I have been wanting to start getting more into reptile education and public talks but I personally don't have any of the big impressive snakes. My husband and I have looked into them in the past and this was not a list min buy on my part. We have talked about keeping them or a rainbow boa for about two years but I did not want to get a hatchling. So it was put on the back of my mind till this Saturday I was on FB and came across an auction for a 3 foot dumerils boa. I feel in love with her picture and so I set my timer for the end of the auction and waited to see if the price was still something I was wanting to pay. End of the story, after a intense bidding war, I won. She will be here this Wed. :crazy02:

My questions or these.

Will a 42qt tub work for short term? I have a heat mat and dimer I can use but I don't know if she would prefer the 42qt or something taller.

I plan on getting a nice tank. I'm not sure if I want something like the T8 model on the animalplastics.com page. Its 42x24x12 or something that would work better. I have never really looked into large cages before so I was hopping someone here could tell me what a good brand is. I plan on having a stand/bookshelf made for below it by a friend.

I would like a link to a reputable and accurate care sheet. I have read many with different information all listed. I was hoping someone with experience with them could tell me what one is a good one.

last question - I was trying to review the 9 snakes listed on the large constrictor ban. I can find a list of what species are all included. I have read it in the past but now cant find the list. I would like to know if the Dumeril's are included.

If your interested in seeing the snake and the bidding war you can click the link below.

Thanks in advance for any help. :D

Uh, I'm surprised no one has answered you yet, I know there are a fair number of keepers on here. Guess they haven't seen it yet.
I'm no help with your questions but congrats on the new addition!

Dumeril's are NOT on the constrictor list, although they do get almost as big as boa constrictors, which are on the list. FYI: The nine constrictor species that on that silly list are:

1. Burmese & Indian Pythons (Python molurus)
2. Reticulated Python (Python reticulatus)
3. Northern African Rock Python (Python sebae)
4. Southern African Python (Python natalensis)
5. Yellow Anaconda (Eunectes notaeus)
6. Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus)
7. Beni / Bolivian Anaconda (Eunectes murinus)
8. Deschaunsee’s Anaconda (Eunectes deschauenseei)
9. Boa Constrictor (Boa Constrictor)

Congratulations on the new addition! Dumeril's are very pretty! :)

Thanks Wendy! I could not remember that they had each the yellow and green anaconda on the list. I kept coming up with 8. It felt like I was trying to remember and name the 7 dwarfs. :crazy01:

Here is the sellers photo of her if anyone is interested.

I'm still confused about this. I currently own a BCI, a BCI locality (Hogg Island), and will be bringing home a BC (not sure if it's BCI or BCC) in a week. Is it illegal for me to own them? And if so, why is my breeder (here in OR) still able to sell them? I would not be a happy camper if my precious boas got confiscated at some point! BTW, these are all captive bred and born snakes.

They are not illegal. The legislation didn't pass. It was overturned around Christmas time last year, but they are pushing another similar bill you be aware of. It's called HR HR511. Here'e a link:

I strongly urge anyone who is in the reptile hobby to visit to USARK.org and join their mailing list, which is free. It's a really easy way to keep informed. You can also join as a member and make donations, which will help them to fight this kind of legislation.

Can anyone tell me what size tub will be fine for (at the longest) 6 months for a 3 foot dum? Thats my main question at this point. Need to get the tub before she shows up. :) Thanks!
