I'm working out the details for building a 4' long x 2' wide rack out of melamine. Anyone have any experience working with melamine that can give me a few tips? Also, would it be better to build a couple 2' x 2' racks instead? My plan is to build enough space to house 12 adult corns. Anyone have plans for a rack made from melamine?

check www.kingsnake.com/obsoleta ... click on the do-it-yourself link ...

i built oe from these plans and it works quite well... good luck, :) jim

Peter,
I assume he melamine you're talking about is particle board coated in melamine. Be careful when drilling or sawing because the edges chip easily. If you sandwich and clamp the board between sheets of thin plywood when doing so it will minimize the chipping.

Also, consider where moisture might come in contact with the finished piece. The particle board will swell up if it gets wet. Any corners should be sealed somehow (like with clear silicone or white exterior caulk) if there is a chance water will get there.

Hope this helps, good luck with your project.

I use, and build for resale, melamine racks. I think they're perfect as long as you recognize that they are incredibly and not easily moved with wheels, they will swell if they're wet on exposed parts, and they will chip, splinter or break if you're not careful while building them.

The plans on kingsnake are good ones to follow.

Thanks for the info. I may just go with plywood and seal it with polyurethene. Still exploring the possibilities.

melamine & other sites

i mean to reply but created to post instead once again s..o..r..r..y

To stop the melamine splintering when cutting and drilling, cover the areas to be cut with tape, this will stop the horrible looking cuts you get with circular and jigsaws.

Regards.

Dean.
