Aquarium for Corn ?

Hi
My crorn snake is about 19" long and 8 months old. I want to get a better cage. Can I use a suuitably sized aquarium tank.

My local supplier said no due to condensation etc. However ive notyiced some people on here use them.

Can I because I prefer the look and visibility to the wooden vivariums.
I will give the snake plenty of hides

CArlo

Most of us here either have our snakes in tubs & racks, or 20g long aquariums. Just make sure you have a screen top with clips to keep it secure. You shouldn't have any condensation problems at all using aspen shavings as a substrate. :wavey:

Re: Aquariums

We prefer to house all our corn snakes in glass aquariums. Like they said most people keep there snakes in rack systems. Like you, we prefer to be able to see them and try to make a natural as possible environment. they have plants, branches, hide areas etc. Besides "I" believe it may be less stressful on the snake. Just my opinions.
Thanks,
Jay & PJ

Great.. I fancy an aquarium type set up.#
What about heating mats.. Do they fit under on the outside..

I like the lamp method but dont fancy the look of lamps on the outside

An under the tank heater is the way to go, though you can put it on the side if there isn't ventilation on the bottom. I like aquariums as well, though only three of my snakes currently are in them. I have to wait to get more room, and stands, etc...

Yes, if you use an under tank heater (UTH) just make sure you elevate the tank. You can buy those little stick on plastic feet for fairly cheap at your local hardware store. UTH seems to be the preferred heating method around here. Gook Luck!!!

I have a 20gal aquarium for my Boa right now and he fits it in perfectly right now. Princess. I have my water bowl on the hot side, but my substrate is newsprint then aspen on top of that and its fine with my water bowl. Plus its giving me the perfect humidity with some plastic wrap over the hot side. But this is a boa, not my corn. My corn how ever has his water bowl on the hot side of the tank, just not on top of the UTH and it seems to me, both of my snakes humidity is perfect and fine.

the exo terra heat pads come with little feet for the aquarium to raise it up, and get the rainforest one, the desert one gets way to hot.

Kathy

Yea. I have to switch out the one on my boa tank. the last people that had him gave him the desert one. BTW....how hard is it to take off those UTH?

I keep my water bowl almost in the middle, but more on the cool side, my humidity is fine, But as Travs last shed wasn't 100% perfect I'll be moving the water bowl over to the warm side to increase the humidity a tad..

U T H

When getting an under tank heater (U T H) you need to make sure you get the appropriate one for the size tank you have. If too small wont generate enough heat. If too big you could fry your animal.

I had bought a new UTH from Repti Therm that was intended for use with a 30-40 gal tank. I have a 35 gal tank and I found that it was too hot to have it completely under one side of the tank. So even though it specifically said "30-40 gal UTH" it just too hot. So it is also good to have some method of monitoring your temps.

OH and I have my water bowl completely on the cool side (in the very corner) and my humidity is fine. Never a bad shed ::knocks on wood::. So I guess it is different for everyone!

I like to be able to see my snakes too. I keep all mine in glass aquariums. I've never had any problem with condensation and like most replies you've gotten already, I use UTH. I regulate the temps with a homemade rheostat I learned how to make from a thread in this website.

I did build a mini rack to brumate them in. I almost hate to leave the rack empty during the summer months. I just might have to buy a few more snakes so the racks don't collect dust and stuff.:grin01:

Ok lads got my 24"x15"x15" glass vivarium. It came with an integrated net top and glass sliding doors (£59). I got a heat map and thermostat to go with it. I set this up to about 30 C by monitoring it with a probe.. Snakes been exploring ever since he got in... Trying to get out I reckon. Any way really please with it and its got excellent visability.. I put a scenery pic behind it.. Oh the heat mat is on the outside and slightly raised.. All i would like now is some sort of lighting so that it all stands out nicely

Posting a pic.. Hopefully this will work
Thanks for advice

Looks good. Personally I would dump the background as I don't like them. Or you could go for all black and trust me that would look good as lond as you had lighting sorted. Even if you do keep you might like to know that the best way to get the best colours out of your background is to use vaseline to stick it on.

For lighting I use regular 25w bulbs but that might be hard in your set-up. Maybe a strip light attatched to the wall above. Or as long as it was inclosed it could be attatched on the inside.

You could also add another hide to the left. You might have one but I can't see. A terrocotta saucer would look good in there and they are really cheap.

Looks good Carlos01!

I personally like and use backgrounds with mine too. I see 2 hides in there, but it looks like both are on the right side and the water bowl is on the left. You'll want to switch the hide closer to the middle with the water bowl and put the hide on the opposite side so your animal can choose between the warm and cool side. To feel secure, your snake may always choose the side with the hides over the side with the appropriate temperature and this may cause digestion problems :puke01: and unnecessary stress.

Thanks
Just got it so stuck what ive got in there for now..
Soon as i get down the shops ill be gettin better stuff to go in as some of it looks a little lost at mo.

heat pad on right.. Been suprised at just how little heat 28 to 31 C is.. My previous mat was deffinatly too hot.. Plus its suprising just how much the thermostat does switch the mat off.. Save some cash on heating :)
Any way sort of an intermidiate set up to for the next 12 month..

Do like the hanging leaves stuff snake twines itself in that. Little bugger is forever trying to probe the top net..

I have Repti Therm UTH and noticed they were a little hot as well. Since I had already stuck them to the bottom of my tanks what I did was got tiles slightly larger than the UTH (free from a flooring sales place) and put them over the UTH inside the viv with the substrate over the tile. Works like a charm, lowered the temp quite a bit and spreads out the heat a bit more as well. Just thought I would pass that along.

If you go into a flooring sales store and tell them you are looking for scrap tiles or what you want it for, in my experience they will give you pieces that they used for demo and don't carry anymore etc.
