Aspen Bedding

I was wondering if all Aspen Bedding is the same. I've heard awhile back that one of the major brands was having issues with an odd odor when you first opened it. Some folks were returning it for a refund for fear of using it on their snakes.

I also half wondered if places like Tractor Supply, Agway, Farm & Country, local feed mills, etc.... would be good places to buy it since they're more likely to offer it at a cheaper "bulk" rate than a pet store.

Anyone have experience or opinion with this?

As far as I can recall, the one problem involving aspen bedding that I have read about was someone that saw a perforated bag of aspen next to a perforated bag of pine chips (this was in Target iirc).

Basically, I would be sure that the aspen does not have any pine or cedar oils (I believe that pine and cedar bark are supposed to be toxic due to the actual oils).

I have heard that feed stores are actually a really good place to buy it, because you can get it in bulk as you implied. Just be sure it does not contain any of the previously mentioned types of wood.

Also, if you are in a pet store they commonly have larger bags in the section for mice/rat/gerbil/ferret etc. section than in the reptile section (I usually find these prices a bit better).

That's what I was wondering!

You see bags in the Reptile areaa of pet shops, then you go to the small animal area and it's a lot cheaper, then you go to a local feed mill and it's even more cheap.
Is Aspen Bedding truely all a like or is their soemthing special about Aspen Bedding for snakes (reptiles)?

To be honest I am more or less an amateur hobbyist. When I was in the pet store there was a gentleman who worked in the reptile section who actually showed me the aspen bedding that was in the small animal section and said to get it there because the packages were cheaper (per cubic inch) than the packages in the reptile section. In fact, it actually says on the package "safe for reptiles."

I know that people on this site have used and recommend feed stores for their aspen. I do not know if the animals that this is marketed towards have similar toxicity issues with the woods (pine and cedar) that corn snakes do. I would try to do a search on this site and see what you come up with.

Possibly someone who has more experience with bulk aspen purchases will chime in.
