I know some people line their vivs with actual Astroturf ... this will cost me £25 to line my viv twice as it's very expensive. Astroturf is quite large and course.

The local pet shop has artifical grass for reptiles (inc snakes), but this is not actual astroturf, it's softer, looks nicer. This will again cost around £25.

I was in my local cash & carry today and found some artificial grass that butchers use to put food on. As far as I can tell this is identical to the pet shop stuff. As it's for food it's inert and chemical free. I've heated it with the heat mat and it doesn't melt/burn etc. This cost £10 for much more than I need.

Is there a reason why i can't use it?

i use astroturf.. 2 sheets in constant rotation... i dont see any reason why the cheaper stuff aint any good...

fake grass looks way better than paper... and very easy to clean...

i also use astro turf in rotation and i works great for me. Just today my room mate bought a 2ft by 6ft section and cut it to what he needed for $1.25 at the hardware store
 
I USE SOMETING CALLED RETILE RUG ITS LIKE GREEN CARPET I ROTATE BECAUSE MY CORNS IS A POOP MACHINE I CLEAN IT ABOUT 3 TIMES A WEEK. ITS NOT HARD TO CLEAN I HAVE NEVER USED ANYTHING ELSE.
 
3 times a week... jeezus... what you feeding it..all bran...??

once a week if that at times... the joy of a snake that digestst everything.. !!
