Baby garter snake stopped feeding

I know this is a corn snake forum, but seeing as you guys always help, and I'm a member anyway, I thought I'd ask - sorry if that's wrong.

A mate of mine had a hatchling garter snake in the autumn (he actually had 2 but one never ate). This snake ate white fish perfectly everytime, munched down whatever he was given, digested it fine. Didn't care if people watched, and handled fine.

6 weeks ago he stopped eating and wont touch it. My mate has tried making it look 'alive' - leaving it in a shot glass in his vivarium.

He may try a pinky.

Any idea how long the snake has - is he in his 'danger zone' now, any ideas. Can you force feed, good idea?

Why would he suddenly stop feeding.

Ideas?

Cheers

Suzy, it could be a number of reasons...Try feeding live guppys in a small clear bowl, cut up live garden worms or small slugs...i've kept a couple different garters; i do know young ones that are eating seem to like to eat every day...I'd check to make sure he hasn't changed any of husbandry practices and start offering a variety of food...when you say "whitefish" you mean like cut up fish or whole pieces?...It could be something in the fish that may have not been there before that the garter tastes/smells and doesn't like...

garters definitely do hibernate, and it could just be that he/she is heading into hibernation mode, particularly if you had a cold spell to initiate it. When our garter stopped eating for a couple of weeks, we cooled him down for 6 weeks, and he came back with an appetite after that.

Food to try are certainly small fish swimming in a water bowl, slugs, earthworms were a strong favorite, but he would only eat onces fom the garden, not ones we bought so the taste must depend on the soil.

Good Luck
