Baby rat nest sculpture

Well, I'm having a hard time sleeping tonight, so I thought I would post some threads about some of the fun crafting/gift shopping I've been doing in preparation for Christmas (can't believe it's only a few days away!)

My girlfriend really loves rats (as pets, not snake food, haha) but in her current situation she can't have any rats. So I was looking around for rat-themed gift ideas to give her.

I stumbled across this hand-made item on Etsy and loved it...https://www.etsy.com/listing/118188165/baby-rat-book-nest-original-polymer-clay
But unfortunately I can't really justify the $100.00 price tag on this fine creation at this time. However, I really really liked the idea, so instead I decided I would try to "make it myself."
I give full credit for the creative idea to the original seller, and I have no intentions of selling my creation, but I think it will make a nice Christmas gift and I'm hoping my girlfriend will appreciate the hand-made quality of it.

Here are some pictures! Being familiar with the mice pinkies I feed my snakes helped out a lot actually. And I know they're not perfect, but I think they turned out pretty well (made from oven-bake polymer clay). The clay turned a much darker "hot pink" color after it came out of the over, which was a little unfortunate, but I think rat pinkies are usually a little darker in color any way.

Edit: sorry for the large/stretched photos :/

So cute! You can go over them with a white glaze to soften the pink if you want to. Nice job!

That is so cool, and very thoughtful! Unfortunately, I usually subscribe to the "Here's-a-gift-card" shopping philosophy. :(

I love it! That is too cute for words :) As a fellow rat lover, I would be tickled to receive something as thoughtful as that.

Cute! Actually, I think you did a better job with the book than the original artist, it's a neater old book and you got the hollowed out nest part more "natural" looking. The one in the link is too regular and neatly hollowed out.

Thanks guys! :D the book was actually a pretty ugly one, but I used gold model paint to cover the spine and glued on the red fabric to hide the worn out cover. Then I used the gold paint again to paint the edges of the pages.

The clay I bought was really way too soft for me to work with, and if I ever try something like this again I'll definitely get a firmer variety of clay. It's all wrapped up and sitting under the tree now!
